I’ve been thinking about creating a series where I take memories that I have, or common settings for recurring dreams, and turn them into paintings that have a dream-like feeling. I want them to convey a poetic, weightless vibe but also use them as a jumping off point to practice scenes and settings more. I struggle with making settings feel large and expansive, so that’s something I want to improve at!
Here are some thumbnails I put together, based loosely on reference pics of the Kawah Ijen volcano in Indonesia. This is a process that I use for my client work: creating 3 rough setups and then picking one to finalize. But now that I have them all together, I feel like I want to make all of them! Help me out, guys: which one is your favorite? 1, 2, or 3? And should I pick one, or finalize all three?

i love all of them, but the first one is my favourite!...there is something with the color on it, specially that cyan in the back of the caracter!...like something really magical is happening there!

I really like 3! You should finalize that, then revisit the first two to see if you want to finalize those.

I think the composition in the first one is the strongest (I also like the colors best in the first one) but the third is a close second!

Having been close to the Mauna Kea in Hawaii and having such a surreal experience my vote goes to #2 but at nighttime =D
However, since you want to extend your knowledge then why not do all three and explore them further? I actually think your "Nimbus" environment could suit these compositions as well

i have the same problem! i switched to using the lasso tool to block in the basic shapes (which is what I did here). when i use a brush, i end up blending too much and losing the contrast and crispness! i definitely recommend lasso tool. i'll upload a video showing how i put together these thumbnails so you can see the process in more detail if you want.

I like the composition of #3 most but it would be much better at night.

I like the compositions of number 1 and 3 the best, since I feel that there's a story being told here.
And I also like the colours used in both as well. It's so hard to choose! But, If you feel like you want to do all of them I would love to see it. I'm looking forward to whatever you decide to do, it'll be beautiful regardless. :D

I would love to see how you make all 3 but I clearly prefer the 1st with the blue in the crater and the yellow on the left :)

1 is my favorite...... ;)

3 would be my favourite. It’s like she’s burning all her problems in front of her. I like the emotion it conveys - like how we need to move on (burn them), learn from it and move forward (like her stance and how the light is emitted underneath her).

As a single image I like 3 the most. But I like how 1 feels like the way up to three. So A series of three would also be very nice. I also love your backgrounds so the more the merrier (?)

1 has the most sense of scale, though if you pick that one I'd recommend expanding the canvas so the figure is smaller and possible it's more of a landscape orientation. 3 seems like it would be the most intense, but is a lot more personal.

like #2 but I agree, #1 seems to leave more room for a nice story

Number 1 implies impending adventure. I'd pick that one. Also, we don't get to see much of your environment work, so it will be exciting to see this!

Number 1! Say Loish since those thumbs happen to be a bit environmental; somehow I have a lot of struggles coming up with thumbnails of environments. I know I can use things like: fore/mid/background, large, middle and small details, but still my sketches seem... bland and smudgy. Got any tips?

They look like an awesome set as is! Such great colours and they feel so deep like you could fall into them!

3 for me, I like the composition and the dramatic movement of the smoke in the front.

That's a tough decision. I really like #1, especially the colors. But in terms of feeling expansive #3 seems to fit better. Maybe mix it up? Like, put the foreground of #3 onto #1? Whatever you'll decide in the end, I'd love to see a finalized version. Getting my dreams on paper is one of my main reasons to draw.

I like all of them very much, and agree they'd make a great triptych -- but I especially like #1 (the one on the left).

#1 has gorgeous colors #2 looks powerful and #3 looks mysterious and is probably my favorite of the compositions. I’m sure any of them would look amazing if you took them to completion. I agree with some people here that you could probably borrow elements from all 3 to make a beautiful single piece.

Number 3 is my favorite, but I suggest bringing over some of the background feel from Number 1 and emphasizing the heat in the small crater. The swirling "gases" are great. Glad to see you into some landscape work.

That's a tough decision. The one on the left almost looks like it could be leading up to either of the others on the right. IF I had to pick one though, I'd say three. Buuuut I wouldn't be mad if you did 1(or both) either.

Number 3 feels the most volcano-y and I like the composition, but I vote you do all of them if you can!

Number 3 with its sweeping shapes is nice, but (I'm cheating), I would like to see a bit more of Number 1 brought in. Maybe a bit more sky, darker foreground values and a sense of great heat in the small crater.
