I got sick with a cold, so I spent an obscene amount of time on the couch in the last few days. After 5 episodes of 90 Day Fiance, I was bored as heck so pulled out my iPad and decided to do some quick re-makes of some older drawings! The original drawing is from 2004, and you can see that in the fashion choices :’) I wanted to update the character to a more current fashion style, so I used the original more as a jumping off point, trying to imagine how this person would look and dress now.

The original sketch is in black and white because I wanted to focus on the shapes. I then proceeded to spend forEVER trying to figure out a way to add color. I’ve added color to b&w a couple of times before but was never happy with the result. It just always felt too ‘colorized’, and especially the skintones felt off whenever I used this technique. In order to make it work, I always end up repainting large parts of it which feels like double the work.
Here’s an attempt at adding color that I ended up abandoning because so much detail was getting lost in the face and I was repainting a lot of it:

So in the end, I went for a more monochromatic look that you can see in the final version. This feels more true to the original black and white sketch which you can see here:

Are you guys interested in seeing a step-by-step of how I added color to this sketch? It’s a bit complex but I’m happy to share! The other remakes I did are coming up - will post them tomorrow!
