PROCESS VIDEO // Kookaburra

Forgot to record the very first sketch lines nd some final touches at the end, but for the rest, I managed to record the full process for Kookaburra! Here’s the final painting:

The process is sped up 10x, and took about 6 hours to make in real time. Some of the things I really struggled with during this process were:

01 // COMPOSITION

I knew that I wanted a character juxtaposed with a flying kookaburra, but didn’t know how to arrange them to really make it work. I wanted them to feel ‘together’ but still distinct from one another. So in the beginning, I have the kookaburra and the character on two different layers and I kind of shift them around until it works.

02 // LIGHTING

I went for a straightforward lighting for both elements, but as a result, they sort of merged into one blob. So I add some bright pink lines to the outside silhouette of the bird to set it apart from the character. I also add some harder shadows and lighter areas right behind the kookaburra to add some contrast to the silhouette as well.

03 // DETAILING

Getting the details on the bird was a challenge! It’s tempting for me to just copy everything from reference photos, but then it just doesn’t have the semi-realistic look that I like. So when adding the details, I focused on using directional brush strokes. Basically, having the feathers and details move with the shape of the bird, so that it has a really distinct sense of mass and shape. This gives it a bit of an animated feel.

I hope you enjoy!  I’m thinking of making a slower version with voice-over and some editing applied, to talk through the process. Would you guys be interested in that? Let me know! If so, what kind of stuff would you like me to talk about? Any input would be helpful. Thanks guys! ❤

I will try to put something together, maybe late spring / early summer!

Loish

I'd really love a voice ovrr version! 😊❤️

And yes a voice-over version would be amazing!!!

Wow, especially love this one! Love to see how you play around with hues and CMJN colors and manage to find the right combinations! Also very impressive to see all the small tweaks you do on the composition, sketch, details, colors, ... It really shows how far you go to find the perfect work! And watching this is also pretty cool to notice the small details of your illustrations rather than just look at the whole picture :)

Baptiste Lambinet

This is amazing! Seeing your process and all the detail you put in is so neat. I would also love a voice over video!

I would love a voice over video! 😊

Kelly Lewellyn

thanks so much for pointing that out! I personally really prefer watching with subtitles, but it never occurred to me that I could put those over my own tutorials / videos. I will look into it and figure out of it's a possibility! thanks for your kind words also!

Loish

hmm, i'd have to find someone who can help me with that! i will keep it in mind, i'm sure it is possible :)

Loish

As someone else said the text you add to your posts is very helpful! I like being able to read it over before and after the video to know what to look for and process what I've seen. That said, I love voice over process videos, it's so fun seeing what the artist was thinking as the image progresses (even though most artists speed up their videos and add the voice over after, it's the same sort of deal I think?). I would also like to put in a request for subtitles, English ones, since I have auditory processing issues and sometimes have a really hard time understanding people, especially if they speak quickly, unclearly, quietly, etc, and I have no idea what your speech sounds like! I know it makes extra work for you to add them but it would do a world of good for making it more accessible for people like me. Just a request though, don't feel guilty or anything if you end up not being able to do it!

FaroreNightclaw

yes id love a voiceover!!

Theeio

You are awesome! The work you put in the patreon presentations is extra special! Thank you so much! Well, and if you ask... voice overs are always great! :) But i really like the accompanying texts as well!! They give a quick overview and mindset intro BEFORE i start the video. That way i can pay attention to (or even notice) those aspects while watching.

MrMista

If voice overs take too long don’t mind it! I think having the text to go along with it is already very helpfu”!

SK

Absolutely stunning, thanks for sharing! I would be interested in a voiceover too, and like many others before me, I'm especially curious about the explanation behind the sliders. Thank you!

rainfrog

Hi Loish! I like when you explain the process of each piece, but... one question, is there any possibility to put Spanish subtitles? Sorry for my English, but is complicated translate it sometimes. Thanks!!! 😊

Veronica

It's nice to see your visual thought process in the beginning as you shift and try different silhouettes and compositions. this is wonderful.

Nicole

Very effective. I'd like a voice over section about your use of the hue/saturation sliders. Seems to be an important part of your subtle color variations. Thanks for sharing like this.

Greg Schultz

Yes, absolutely! Any voice over would be great, I personally enjoy when artist talk more about the process, why they are making certain choices and all the work they do "backstage". Thank you! :D

Delia

yes, voice over explaining how and where to put shading and highlights please! doesn't have to be for the entire video, but even just a small chunk to explain how your lighting process. thank you! love your work :)

Courtney Dobbs

Yes if you have time, I love the voice overs. Don't get me wrong I really enjoy watching the process videos too but the voice over just seem a little more personal and I love that!

lily

Yes!! Would *love* to hear you walk us through each piece and talking about the process, the decisions you made, and the things you were solving for. That would be amazing!!

Rali M.

Yes please! Some voice over would be awsome if you could! Just hearing more about it would be great! :3
