This was the most frustrating part because honestly, halfway through the process I felt like the image was close to being done. But when I zoomed in, I saw that there was much work that needed to be done to clean up the edges and generally smooth everything out. So this was the part of the process that was most time consuming, but involved the least creative decisions.
Notes for this video:
- When I’m cleaning up an image, I focus mostly on the edges. Usually that’s all it takes to make certain shapes / details look finished. So you’ll see me zooming in on the plants and getting those edges nice and clean.
- I like to work from the imagination when it comes to creating a pose, becaus that creates the most movement. But usually this means that the feet and hands are not as realistic as I would like them to be. I usually end up changing them towards the end, when the painting has reached a higher level of detail. In this video, you’ll see around the 40 minute mark that I completely re-paint the feet into a different pose.
- When the details are done, I can apply some final color corrections. I do this in many different ways: selecting certain areas and applying changes only to that area, making new layers and putting them in different blending modes, and tweaking the color adjustment tools. These final tweaks are what makes the image come together!

2021-12-17 01:24:40 +0000 UTCthank you! i always find that a balance of messy / textured paintwork with smooth / clean paintwork works best. if it's only smooth, then it just looks fake and plasticky. for this one, finding the balance between both was a big challenge!

Though, it's still very impressive how you manage to get such a creamy-smooth finish with just a few soft passes over the more hatchy/scribbly base. More things to try, muahaha.
