Who Can Resist Nakano Nino? [200]

Hearing Nakano Nino’s question, Yukinoshita Yukino first glanced at Shirase, correctly guessing he was the source. She nodded calmly. “Yes. He agreed quite a while ago.”

“Why does it have to be him?” Nino’s expression soured. She could accept lending Shirase to Ichika—or even another sister—if they really needed him. But this girl in front of her was absolutely off-limits.

Of course, by “lending,” she meant for legitimate help only.

Lending your boyfriend for a date—even to a sister—was out of the question.

“Because aside from him, there’s no one else at school who interests me,” Yukino replied coolly, twisting the cap back on the bottle.

“There you go again with that arrogant tone… Yukinoshita-san, I won’t allow it,” Nino said firmly.

Yukinoshita Yukino raised a brow. “You won’t allow it? On what grounds?”

“I—”

Nino flushed, words tangling on her tongue.

Then someone gently took her hand. She looked over to see Shirase lacing his fingers with hers, warmth rushing into her chest. Her confidence returned in an instant.

“Is this not enough?”

Blushing hard, she lifted their intertwined hands high—her boldest public move yet.

“Oh.” Yukinoshita’s response was so bland it carried no emotion at all.

It only made Nino bristle. “What do you mean, ‘oh’? Are you agreeing or not?”

“Of course… not.”

Yukinoshita’s lips curved into a smile that could be smug or simply proud.

Before Nino could fire back, Yukino turned to Shirase and said evenly, “Are you planning to be someone who goes back on his word?”

“He’s not!” Nino jumped in to defend him. “I’m the one who disagrees.”

“Isn’t that the same?”

“Huh?”

“What do you mean, ‘huh’? I asked him to model and he agreed beforehand. Now you’re stepping in to object—aren’t you basically forcing him to break his promise?”

“T-that’s not what I meant.”

“I know exactly what you meant. You’re jealous seeing him around me. But if the idea of him just being my model makes you this uneasy, should I assume you doubt your own charm—afraid he might fall for me instead?”

“Impossible!”

Nino was both angry and stunned.

Angry because Yukinoshita’s words were openly provocative.

Stunned because—how could she say something that bold so directly?

Yukinoshita remained composed, leisurely toweling her hair dry. “Shirase and I had a prior deal. If he hadn’t agreed to model, I wouldn’t have come today at all.”

Then she suddenly offered Nino a beautiful, disarming smile. “Actually, if you think about it, you should be confronting your sister, not me.”

“Why?”

Nino felt the ground slipping under her and couldn’t seize control of the conversation.

“Because after my match with Nakano Yotsuba-san, I pieced it together.”

She paused, her smile widening slightly. This time her gaze included both Nino and Shirase. “The reason Shirase called and invited me today was clearly Nakano Ichika-san’s idea. She probably promised him some benefit and kept asking until he reluctantly agreed…”

“In other words, when this plan was made, you and I were both kept in the dark. The real mastermind was Nakano Ichika-san.”

Nino was struck speechless.

She wanted to argue, but couldn’t find a foothold—because everything Yukinoshita said was true.

Shirase had already explained it earlier.

“How about I handle it from here?” Shirase said suddenly.

Nino, dazed from Yukinoshita’s verbal barrage, didn’t realize he was talking to her. “Handle what?”

“Tagging in.” Shirase extended his hand theatrically. “My turn in the relay.”

Nino felt both exasperated and amused. So you really saw my talk with Yukinoshita-san as a martial-arts bout?

In front of them, Yukinoshita draped the towel over her shoulders, unimpressed. “You’re as childish as ever.”

Shirase disagreed without missing a beat. “Since Nino isn’t in top form today and couldn’t find a breakthrough, it’s perfectly reasonable for her backup to tag in.”

Listening from the side, Nino’s cheeks burned hotter. He was clearly giving her a graceful exit.

I got completely floored just now. ‘Not in top form,’ huh?

Yukinoshita looked at him helplessly. “Nakano-san and I were having a normal conversation, not a debate. Then again, your logic often deviates from normal. That’s exactly why I hate watching you embarrass yourself.”

Shirase stood tall. “Oh? Are you worried about me?”

Nino snapped out of it, instantly on guard again.

Yukinoshita pressed her fingers to her forehead, looking pained. “If you insist on calling it worry, then call it basic classmate concern. What I mean is your foolishness is embarrassing. Imagine people finding out the soccer ace acts like this—what would they think?”

“They’d probably think, ‘Wow, what an interesting guy!’” Shirase said earnestly.

Nino almost broke character, stifling a laugh as she gave him a light push.

Yukinoshita frowned, ready to retort—then remembered a certain group of girls at school who were obsessed with Shirase. She’d even heard some of their gossip herself.

If they saw this foolish side, they’d react exactly as he claimed—finding it uniquely charming.

Even she, who didn’t chase idols or follow entertainment news, understood how terrifying “fan filters” could be.

In some fans’ eyes, even if their idol peed in public, they’d praise him for kindly watering a roadside tree.

“Forget it. I won’t argue.”

Yukinoshita knew the conversation had lost its point. She turned back to Nino. “If you’re truly afraid he’ll fall for me, I can see why you’d object to him modeling. But understanding is one thing. Once I decide something, I don’t back down halfway.”

The smile on Nino’s face froze and faded into something far more serious.
