Fact: R. Lee Ermey was an actual Marine, he served in Vietnam and was actually a Drill Instructor. Although he left as a Staff Sergeant, he was later honorarily promoted to Gunnery Sergeant. He also played a Drill Instructor in another Vietnam War movie called The Boys in Copmpany C. His trick to breaking into acting was being a technical advisor in movies, especially military movies and then somehow convince the moviemakers to let him try for a part.
