It would've felt horrible! The withdrawal leads to both mental and physical symptoms so it would've been incredibly painful!

Not only has he been using alcohol to mentally numb himself from his past, he's physically addicted to it. He would suffer a number of effects drying out such as insomnia, hallucinations, shaking, and extreme feelings of hot and cold.
