The ending makes no sense because New Line Cinema wanted it like that to leave it open for a sequel. But basically, Nancy created the Freddy character in her dream and then she turned her back on him to waste its energy. There were clues all through that it was a dream, from Nancy describing a dream that Tina actually had to Glen dying in a way that can't be logically explained. Another clue was Nancy's phone ringing after being disconnected while she was supposedly awake. It was meant to be one long nightmare of Nancy's
