When Pentatonic Scales Fail, Play THIS Instead!

Hello friends,

Welcome back to Swiftlessons for another beginner-intermediate level lead guitar tutorial. Major and minor pentatonic scales have a well-deserved reputation for being versatile. These five tone patterns have the ability to transcend genres, providing a palette with which we can create simple, yet captivating melodic ideas. While no one can question the usefulness of pentatonics, they do have their limitations, especially when it comes to soloing over more exotic chord progressions. So, in this tutorial I'll reveal the situations where pentatonic scales just won't cut it, and how you can alter the scale to fit problematic chord changes. Let's get started!

Note: Backing tracks have now been added in three keys! Check back in a few days for a follow up lesson on how to transpose these techniques! -Rob

Yep, just uploaded that progression in three keys. I’ll do a follow up on how to transpose these techniques.

Hi Rob, is there a backing track for this lesson?

That’s awesome to hear. Well if you ever have any questions on Polish language stuff, feel free to reach out. I would gladly give back some knowledge after all the great musical learning from your site!

Hey Raf, so glad you’re digging this one. My wife is originally from Poland, and moved to the states when she was young. So we’re spending some time here, practicing our polish and introducing the culture to our daughter. It’s been a great trip so far, I could definitely see myself living here someday.

Another great lesson - short but yet so full of practical, useful info! Rob what brings you to Krakow, Poland? I am from Warsaw originally :)

When is the backing track out?

My pleasure Gerry, I love teaching these little hacks. Have fun! -Rob

That's a huge breakthrough Teddy, some of the best major guitar solos are played using that simple pentatonic box. Enjoy your practice! -Rob

I didn’t even know about the major pentatonic scale in that shape before this lesson.😆

Thank you!

Hey Gerry, thanks for letting me know. It should be good to go now. Just refresh the page. 👍

Hey everyone, thanks so much for checking out this lesson. I'll have a backing track up for you very soon, I just need my daughter to wake up so I can record it. Enjoy your practice! -Rob
