Design Workshop 22 - Shapes

10:30 - 12:00 pm

Today I'll be studying a portrait a talking specifically about shape design. I think this is one of the most valuable aspects of drawing and painting and will change the way you see your art and references.  I've attached the reference I'll be using below if you want to follow along!

I had also done the same, but it didn't give the same effect for me. I did eventually put it together though. Christophe got his feathery touch effect using the tool's texture settings rather than the standard settings like hardness and flow. I put in a solid-black texture (no texture, effectively) and that did the trick. I wanted the same pressure of his textured pencils, but a smooth round brush.

I also had this issue initially. I use a wacom pen display, I went into my wacom tablet properties, and then under pen I changed the tip feel to the highest firm setting. Afterwards, I found I had the same work-ability and slow build up as in the videos.

You mentioned at the end how your drawing was off from the reference. But your drawing still looked great and was appealing. This video made me realise how much emphasis I put on myself to get accurate proportions, when what I really want is to design appealing faces. So what exercise can I use to calibrate me, to get good at designing good looking faces from a reference.

Hey Christophe! Thanks for taking the time with all your resources. Been following for a while and have learned a ton from your content. I have a question regarding your brush settings: I've followed previous posts and downloaded the brushes from your pack, but mine always come in very dark very quickly compared to what I see here. 100%o, 50%f, same stylus hardness in Wacom settings. I'm being gentle on the pressure, I promise. I find I can only get similarly gentle applications with my flow set to ~10%. I'm getting results, but the discrepancy is bugging me. Wondering if something changed from a previous explanation that I missed. Would it be possible to get a (very) quick rundown sometime soon? I don't want to take too much of your time! I'm not able to make your livestreams unfortunately. Even a couple screenshots would help me troubleshoot. If anyone else knows or can help, I'd appreciate the guidance! (Brushes don't make the artist, but I'm trying to make a study of a 3H drawing using a 9B. I need to calibrate my tools.)
