How to view VR content

As you might see I’m a lil bit fixated about VR. So even tho my PC is not that powerful I can spit out some medium quality stills and short videos. Some of which are coming soon!

Because of that I decided to make sure everybody knows how to view tem.

I have Windows so this guide will show steps in that op-system, in other systems it should be similar.

1) Oculus Quest

a) You have Virtual Desktop or Oculus Link:

• See point 3.

b) You have just Quest:

• You need to download SideQuest. This program allows you to put files to the quest. I recommend this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlflUCGOuHo
• Connect your Quest to the PC and start SideQuest. After brief while you should see googles appeared in file explorer.

• Enter Quest directory, make folder inside and place your files there (the folder is optional, I like to keep all my stuff in one location so there is no mess). You can make subfolders, and they will show as “categories” in Oculus Gallery.

• Put on the googles, navigate to Oculus Gallery

• Select "Iternal storage" as source.

• You should be presented with all folders containing some kind of media in your device.

• Select any folder / file
• In file view, click on little 180 3D icon to see all potions.

• From displayed option select correct projection type. Block A and B will be shown when you play a video, block A will be shown when you look at image.

2) Oculus Rift / S

• See point 3.

3) Steam VR

• Open stem VR. If you have Oculus Link, open Stem VR via Oculus app, if you have Virtual Desktop open Stem VR form app menu.
• After you googles appear at the Steam VR popup (on your PC) select menu icon and then “Multimedia player”

• Find your multimedia in block A, select projection types in LAYOUT and FORMAT panels. The same panel should be seen by you in googles.

I will post here (some already are) couple types of 3D content. They have their special codes to indicate what type of projection should be selected. Acronims: SBS – side by side, TB – top bottom, 3D – planar video / image with depth, VR180 – 3D video / image with projection on half of the sphere -> 180° FOV, VR360 - 3D video / image with projection on whole sphere -> 360° FOV. There is a lot of this because different versions render at different speeds, the fastest is normal 2D, the slowest is VR360.

File names and their content:

Fun (or weird) fact about Oculus Quest image gallery is this app decrease / blurs 4k VR panoramas so they look very similar to 2k versions. You can spot the difference by closing you right eye and reputedly pushing trigger button to show and hide menu. Showing the menu copies left eye image to right eye, and temporarily unblurs the image. I hope they fix this. In the meanwhile I advise to use Stem VR multimedia player.
