I said “aren’t I a good girl for bringing you that thuddy thing?” expecting all the praise.
“You’re a good girl, yeah,” she said (I sensed hesitation) “but you picked the paddle you like.”
I blinked a few times quickly, unsure how to absorb this ego dive.
She made a hesitant face, like someone apologetic about delivering bad news. “I like it better when you don’t like it, and I know you know this.” The indignant sound of the air expelling from my lungs was involuntary. She patted the crown of my head to give condescending comfort.
When I handed her the stingy double-flapped actually-made-for-real-horses crop and spread my legs at her feet, exposing my tender bare thighs, she smiled. Beamed. “There’s my good girl.”
(It hurt, and it was worth it.)
