Riding the Rim

Another of the drawings I started during my Need for Speed themed Picarto stream. For a few years in the late 1970s I was into skateboarding. This was during the period when what we might call the modern skateboard came into existence. Gone were the skinny, steel wheels that had been the standard. In their place the much wider polyurethane wheels with ball bearing hubs, wider axles, and stronger trucks.

It was during this time that pool riding started to become a thing. In our neighborhood their was an abandoned house that had an empty pool. Well it was usually empty in the summertime after the rainwater evaporated out of it, and the mosquitoes had died off. We'd sneak onto the property and attempt pool riding with varying degrees of success and failure. Boy did we collect a variety of scrapes, bruises, abrasions. This was usually done to the sound of KISS's Destroyer album since one in our group had gotten a brand new portable cassette player for Christmas. So for me I associate the song Detroit Rock City Link with skateboards and riding minibikes.

Now back then skateboarding was almost exclusively something that boys did, but I could totally see Sunset Shimmer being into it, and more importantly being good at it. Good enough to make the boys shut up respect her.
