Wrapped up in a job

The sea perch averted its attention from looking for sand fleas and other tasty things on the sea floor to look up. There was an awful lot of commotion going on above it, but it was like nothing it had heard before. It did sound threatening so the perch decided to satisfy its curiosity and swam up to explore it.

It quickly discovered the source of the commotion. 3 young mermaids were dealing with 3 particularly curious and friendly octopi. As the sea perch got closer it started catching snippets of conversation from the mermares.

"Um Clingy." The orange and purple maned mermaid said. "I know Fluttershy said you 3 were really friendly, but have you ever of the concept of Personal Space?"

"Scoot that ain't Clingy." Said the buttercream yellow mermaid with the deep rose mane and red bow in it. She had her own octopus latched on to her belly "That's Krakky. Clingy is stuck ta me!"

"Girls!" The white mermaid exclaimed. "I could really use a hand right now. Hickey is um, well uh, handful, and they're living up their name! Also Fluttershy wasn't kidding when she Hickey was a big boy now!"

At that moment the white mermaid glanced over her shoulder and noticed the sea perch looking at her. Also realized she could understand what it was thinking.

Weird. Really weird. The perch thought

"Um. Hello!" The white mermaid said to the new arrival. "Um, are you a friend or neighbor of Hickey? If so could you please ask them to please um, well, let go of me for moment?"

The perch stared at mermaid and remembered what had been told when it had been a little fry.

Mermaids are weird. Best to steer clear of them.

The perch then turned and swam away. As it did the white mermaid called after it. "No! Wait! Don't go! Could you please....." After a second she muttered an expletive. "Shit!"

This is patron reward for Ookami88. Fluttershy apparently is currently too busy to check on her underwater friends, so using the chaos magic that Discord gave her she asked the CMC to check-in on her aquatic friends. Apparently the mares didn't ask enough questions of Flutters before taking the job.

FYI. Hickey is effectively a Giant Pacific Octopus, and they can get quite big. Link
