This is the first map I've created from scratch and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I decided to base my first map on an old environment design from a few years ago that I'm particularly fond of.
I hope you'll find it useful.
Description
Two giant constructs of stone rise from the horizon. The surrounding lands are bleak and barren, void of any features except for a small stream that winds it's way across the landscape to pass between the ancient pair.
Approaching the monoliths, the howl of icy wind fills your ears and you feel the crunch of snow underfoot. Strangely the wind drops to nothing when you finally reach the space between the two stones, only the gentle movement of the stream preventing total silence.
Hewn of stone, similar to that revealed along the banks of the stream, the menhir feel cold to the touch. Weather and time have not been kind to these ancient monuments, but surprisingly strange carvings can be seen on the outer sides of each. The meaning of these has been lost to time, but fanciful stories tell of gateways to other worlds.
Encounter suggestions
This environment was originally based on a short story I wrote many years ago. In the story there was a set of standing stones that worked as a sort of ancient magic-tech gateway to the stars. You could use this location as a gateway to other planes, that needs to be activated with the right set of phrases, item or particular NPC. I've included a fey version of the map, that could be the other side of a planar gateway.
Alternatively this could be an opportunity to face off against a antagonist who is trying to activate the gateway, and the party has to prevent them from completing the spell or ritual. An evil druid might fit here.
The banks of the stream should be considered difficult terrain to make traversing from one side to other a risky move. There are a couple of locations that should be about the right distance for attempting a leap across.
