In the mud
Added 2020-05-07 20:54:55 +0000 UTCAmanda ducked down in the shell crater as a burst of fire from a Maxim sent mud flying above her. Rising to a kneeling position the skunk raised her rifle and gave the bolt of her Ross Rifle a yank and felt the action resist. Cursing in frustration she gave the bolt a firmer yank. Finally the action relented and the empty .303 cartridge was ejected from the rifle. Slamming the straight-pull action forward she chambered another round. With her rifle reloaded she paused for a moment. Then she continued sprinting across the mud of Flanders.

The Ross Rifle has an almost legendary reputation for being a bad rifle. Some of it is well deserved, but some of it pure internet BS. About 6 year ago Ian at Forgotten Weapons did a very good video exploring some mechanical issues of the RossMK III Rifle. Link Othais and May at C&Rensal did a longer video about the individuals who permitted the rifle to go into service in the first place. Poor girl!! Get rid of that rifle ASAP. Pick up a discarded Enfield or even a Mauser. The Ross had a bad battle reputation. It was a find marksman rifle when keep in perfect working order......that is nearly impossible in combat situations. A small bit of dirt or mud will render the weapon useless except as a spear. If the screws come lose on the bolt handle the recoil could send it back hitting you in the face. Any dent on the bolt lock grooves made the weapon hard to function. Tolerances were so small the slightest misalignment rendered the weapon non firing. While a fine shooter it was terrible in the muck and grime of battle. It was however a fine sniper accurate rifle even morphing into the Huot Automatic Rifle...a drum fed rapid firing machine gun but never made it to war usage and only a had full were made.
