I posted a work in progress of this piece, and if you follow me on Twitter you've seen numerous postings as I went through this piece step by step. Well here it is finished and ready to ship to my patron/client Sylvan Ryan who has banked many, many of his $50.00 month pledges to make this piece possible.
The piece was an interesting challenge in many ways.
First I haven't done many finished colored examples of marble sculpture so I had to do a bit of homework first.
Second the piece could've been rather dull with all the light colored stonework in the piece, so I deliberately chose an early morning setting to give some more vibrant reflective colors.
Third Marble Vein the mare resting on plinth is almost marble white herself, but I didn't want her to be mistaken for one of statues in the piece. I did that subtly adjusting the shadows and highlights on her to give them a softer edge.
Fourth I needed enough room to render some of the details in the piece, but at the same time I didn't want the piece to be gigantic, so I had to strike a balance in it. The final image size was 11.25"H x 23.25"W. Still I ended up working in some fairly small areas. Example, the landscape painting behind Marble Vein is only 1.75"H x 2.75"W.
The piece is in my typical colored pencil with marker pen, technical pen, and white gouache details. The working surface is Strathmore 500 Series 2ply Vellum finish Bristol Board.
