Curiosity Killed the Cat... or did it?

Theme: Fluff

Naruto: Yugito Nii/ OC- Yugito Nii, the jinchūriki of the Two-Tails, finds herself trapped in a cycle of monotony. With no missions from the Raikage for weeks, her days blur into a repetitive haze of training and solitary shamisen sessions. Restless and yearning for excitement, she takes a sudden stroll across Kumogakure's streets and stumbles into one of the strangest Konoha’s spies she has ever seen or heard. But that didn’t make him any less interesting.

-----------------------------------------------------

The sun was setting over Kumogakure when Yugito Nii left her private training ground, sweat cooling uncomfortably on her skin. Something felt wrong - her movements had been precise as always, her chakra control perfect, yet satisfaction eluded her. The nagging feeling of stagnation clawed at her mind, a sensation that any elite jōnin would find maddening.

There was a wall there, invisible but undeniably present, blocking her progress. The frustration of it made her fingers twitch.

Maybe it was time to return to Genbu, to dive deeper into her training not as a kunoichi of Kumo, but as the vessel of the Two-Tails. The thought brought a slight warmth to her chest - Matatabi’s chakra, responding to her consideration.

Speaking of her Bijuu... Perhaps a conversation with Matatabi was overdue, and the thought caused her tongue to click in mild annoyance, feeling slightly envy how B could casually rap with his Bijuu while walking down the street. For her, it meant finding a quiet spot, settling into meditation, and diving deep into her mindscape so she couldn’t do that just anywhere.

Was it just stress building up? The Raikage hadn’t given her any mission for almost a month now, for safety or just paranoia, but she hadn’t been deployed for missions in a long time, so she was feeling restless… yeah, restless would be the right word.

The village had grown quiet as night approached, most establishments already closed for the day, their windows dark and uninviting. No chance of finding a decent training partner or even a place to unwind. The streets of Kumo became her only companion.

As she walked, the cool mountain air played with loose strands of her blonde hair. The village had changed recently - this particular street showcased freshly painted buildings in Kumo’s signature whites and blues, their surfaces still glossy under the streetlights. A boutique’s large window displayed civilian fashion that seemed almost alien to her - delicate fabrics that would tear in the first minutes of training or pain to wash in general.

Her gaze drifted upward to the starlit sky, darker than usual without the moon’s presence. The vast expanse above only emphasized how meaningless this wandering was. Her time would be better spent at home, sleeping off this strange mood until tomorrow’s duties called. With a deep, frustrated sigh that carried weeks of pent-up tension, she channeled chakra to her feet and leaped onto the nearest rooftop.

The familiar rhythm of roof-hopping should have been soothing, but even that felt hollow tonight. Then, movement caught her trained eye - a gathering of stray cats, more than she usually saw in one place, huddled together on a lower rooftop. Normally, she would have pressed on, but something about their behavior tugged at her instincts. Perhaps it was her affinity with feline creatures, or maybe just the oddity of their numbers, but she found herself changing course.

Landing silently on a nearby ledge before dropping to the ground, Yugito investigated what had captured the attention of the small animals. As she turned into the alleyway, she found the source - a young man with short black hair was squatting, hand-feeding a gray cat while simultaneously petting another that was enthusiastically purring and rubbing against his legs.

Yugito blinked, taking in the peculiar sight. The man had now scooped up a small kitten that was meowing joyfully rather than in distress, cradling it carefully before playfully booping its pink nose. Taking in her surroundings, she noticed the growing crowd of cats, both young and old, seemingly waiting their turn to be pampered by this stranger... it was oddly fascinating.

Something wasn’t adding up. Why were all the cats in the vicinity drawn to him? Her senses couldn’t detect anything unusual - no chakra manipulation, no techniques, nothing out of the ordinary.

“Ah! Hello!” His face lit up upon noticing her. “Do these sweeties belong to you? They’re absolutely wonderful!” He lifted the kitten gently, his entire demeanor radiating genuine warmth.

“No,” Yugito replied, maintaining her cool. “I was just passing by.”

“Aww, that’s okay too!” He carefully lowered the kitten, which immediately curled around his ankle. “I heard all this meowing and couldn’t help myself. Look how precious they all are!” His voice was filled with pure delight as the cats swarmed around him, their combined purring creating quite the symphony.

The scene was admittedly endearing, but Yugito quickly pushed that thought aside, focusing on the situation at hand.

“Who exactly are you?” she asked, her tone carrying an edge of authority. “And what’s your business here?”

“Oh! I’m Ichiro!” He beamed, still scratching behind a cat’s ears. “And I’m actually the best spy from Konoha!”

Wait...what?

“A... spy?” Yugito repeated slowly, certain she must have misheard.

“Yep! The very best in the Land of Fire!” He announced with childlike enthusiasm, as if he were sharing his favorite food rather than classified information.

“You’re... seriously claiming to be a spy?” She couldn’t quite keep the disbelief from her voice.

“Of course! Look, I even have my special spy license!” He fumbled in his pocket with one hand, the other still cradling a purring cat, and proudly presented a plastic card.

“Uhhh...” She blinked as she examined the ID card he’d handed her. There it was in bold red letters: ‘SPY’, complete with a photo of him grinning at the camera like he was posing for a vacation snapshot.

This guy couldn’t possibly be a spy. As someone who had dealt with actual spies before, everything about him went against every rule in the espionage handbook. And yet, here he was, surrounded by stray cats in a Kumogakure alley, proudly displaying what had to be the most obvious fake spy ID in shinobi history.

Taking a closer look, she noticed he was even wearing his Konoha headband openly around his neck, not making the slightest attempt at concealment. The sight was so absurd, it almost gave her a headache.

“Mhmm, everybody always makes that face, dunno why.” He shrugged cheerfully, returning his attention to the kitten that was now playfully nibbling at his fingers.

“I wonder why...” She muttered under her breath.

“They’ve also said that!” Ichiro laughed heartily, finding genuine amusement in the situation while Yugito stood there, growing more bewildered by the second.

Technically, she should arrest him and drag him to the intelligence department. It was protocol. But her curiosity was getting the better of her. She needed to understand what exactly she was dealing with here.

“Okay then...” she started carefully, “If you’re truly a spy, you must have written an espionage report, haven’t you?”

His face lit up like a festival lantern. “Of course I did! Do you want to see it?”

Yugito was momentarily thrown off balance by his eagerness, but quickly recovered. “Uhhh...okay?”

He nodded enthusiastically and reached under his clothes, pulling out a red book. “Here is my report, everything is separated by dates. You can see them at the top right corner!” He flipped it open excitedly to demonstrate.

She snatched the book from his hands, half-expecting to find encrypted messages or hidden codes. Instead, she discovered only four written pages - the rest completely blank.

“Why are there only four written pages?” she asked, already dreading the answer.

“Because it is my fourth day!” he replied with pure innocence, as if it were the most logical thing in the world.

She rolled her eyes at the obvious answer, but returned her attention to the contents. Whatever was written in these pages had to provide some insight into... whatever this situation was.

“Day 1 in Kumo! The clouds here are so fluffy, they look like cotton candy! Note to self: cotton candy sounds good right now. The buildings are super tall and everything’s connected by these cool bridges. I got lost three times, but the view was amazing each time! Found a nice ramen stand - the owner has a cute cat that sits on the counter. Her name is Mochi, and she likes belly rubs.

Day 2: Made friends with seven cats today! There’s a gray one with a crooked tail that I named Mr. Wiggles. He really likes dried fish. Bought some more to share tomorrow. Also, the weather is nice up here, but my ears keep popping. Do ninja get used to the altitude? Must investigate further.

Day 3: Found the best spot to watch sunset! It’s behind the thunder shrine - the cats there are super friendly. Met an old lady who showed me how to make proper Kumo-style tea. She said my whisking technique needs work but gave me extra dango, anyway. Mr. Wiggles brought two friends!

Day 4 (Today!): The street near the marketplace got renovated. The paint smells fresh! Counted 23 different types of clouds today - my favorite looked like a rabbit. Found this amazing alley where lots of cats gather. They’re all so sweet! Note: Must bring more treats tomorrow.

Yugito stared at the pages, then at Ichiro, who was now dangling a piece of string for three kittens, then back at the pages. There wasn’t a single piece of valuable intelligence. No coded messages, no hidden meanings - just pure, unfiltered observations about cats, food, and clouds.

“This... this is your spy report?” she asked incredulously.

“Yep!” Ichiro beamed while a kitten climbed onto his shoulder. “I made sure to write everything I saw! Oh, did you get to the part about Mr. Wiggles? He was so sweet!”

Yugito pinched the bridge of her nose, feeling a headache coming on. “These are just... observations. There’s nothing here about military strength, village defenses, or strategic information.”

“Oh!” His eyes widened with genuine surprise. “Was I supposed to write about that stuff, too? But the clouds and cats are so much more interesting! And have you tried the dango from the shop near the shrine? The old lady there is so nice!”

She couldn’t decide if this was the worst spy in history or if this was some elaborate deception, she couldn’t figure out. Either way, watching him get distracted by a cat batting at his headband wasn’t helping her reach any conclusions.

Yugito closed the red book and handed it back to him, trying to process what she had just read. She had interrogated spies before, dealt with infiltrators and saboteurs, but this... this was something else entirely.

“Oh by the way, do you know where I should go and do some super ultra secret spy work?” Ichiro asked earnestly while tucking his ‘report’ away, a kitten still perched on his shoulder.

And that was when the absurdity of the situation finally broke through her professional demeanor. “Pfff...hahahhahahahaha.” She couldn’t help but laugh, the sound echoing in the alley and startling a few cats.

“Hey, why are you laughing?” He tilted his head, genuinely confused. “I’m being serious! The Hokage said I should do spy stuff, but nobody tells me exactly what that means. They just keep laughing like you’re doing now.” He pouted slightly while absentmindedly scratching under the chin of the kitten on his shoulder.

Yugito had to take a deep breath to compose herself. Here was supposedly a spy from another village, asking her - a Kumo jōnin - where to do ‘spy stuff’ while covered in cats. Either this was the most elaborate facade she’d ever encountered, or...

“Say, Ichiro,” she managed between residual chuckles, “who exactly sent you on this... mission?”

“Oh! Lady Tsunade did! Well, sort of…. maybe? She was really angry about something I did with the mission archives - I just wanted to organize them by color! But then she started yelling about ‘might as well send me to spy on Kumo’ and here I am!” He grinned proudly. “Though I think she was still yelling something else when I left...”

‘He’s an idiot!’

The realization hit her like a lightning bolt, causing her to burst into uncontrollable laughter. She clutched her head; the laughter shaking her entire body until her knees threatened to give out. She stumbled back a few steps, trying to maintain her composure and failing spectacularly.

“Are you alright?” Ichiro’s concerned voice only made it funnier, his head tilted like one of his feline companions.

She quickly raised a hand, taking deep breaths to calm herself. “Yes! It’s just...nevermind.” She giggled... wait, did she just giggle? The fearsome Two-Tails jinchūriki, elite jōnin of Kumogakure, actually giggled?

“Oh, by the way, what’s your name?” His innocent question pulled her from her self-reflection.

“You can call me Yugito Nii,” she responded, surprising herself with her honesty. Any other time, with any other supposed ‘spy’, she would have used an alias.

Ichiro just smiled warmly and nodded, pulling out his red book and pen again. “And after playing with a lot of cats, I met a beautiful girl called Yugito Nii,” he murmured while writing, completely oblivious to how such a casual compliment made her blink in surprise.

This night had definitely taken an unexpected turn, but…

But perhaps this was exactly the kind of absurdity she needed to break through her earlier mood.
