(untitled WIP) - Nick and Weaselton

Hey guys!

Man I‘m upset with how busy and slightly chaotic things have been for me lately. Thank you, all of you, for continuing to stick by me and supporting me ;; You’re all amazing.

So this piece is another ambitious one, several things to say. I’ve always thought about this exchange in the movie:

”Well well, look who it is. The Duke of Bootleg.”

”What’s it to you Wilde? Shouldn’t you be melting down a popsicle or something?”

The fact that Nick always says he knows everyone and Weaselton refers to him by his last name, and knows about his latest con work, made me wonder if there might be some ugly history behind them; since they both had a negative tone in that exchange and Nick clearly had zero problem with the idea of icing him.

So this piece would take place long before Nick meets Judy. Maybe one of them owes the other money? Jealousy over the next best scam? Whatever the beef, they’re definitely not pals here.

Also a head canon (or just an excuse to draw cool clothes, you decide): I like the idea that when he’s not going around pretending to be a dad, he’s just wearing regular street clothes. I‘m getting Jesse Pinkman vibes from this and I love it. I can’t wait to finish this piece. o/

The background is just a dark nasty alleyway. It’s night. c:

Aww, how nice to hear! Thank you so much!

I just LOVE how much thought you put into your pieces, Relaxable!! All of your head cannons make perfect sense to me, and I think you nailed their sizes!

Thank you! I totally agree with all of this, fantastic observations and theories. I've made Weaselton just a tiiiny bit bigger, it's an unnoticeable difference. I still think he looks as small as a child here and I preferred it when I scaled him up a bit.

This is pretty cool. And very observant of you with how they were talking to each other. As I see it, I think their dislike of each other comes from a difference in their core beliefs/values. Nick may be jaded at this point in his life, but deep down, there is still a good heart beating in him. There are still things that are sacred to him (or off-limits if you like). Weaselton, on the other hand doesn't see it that way. This is most evident when Judy is chasing Weaselton. He just ran into little Rodentia, without a single care for the citizens. What he did was extremely dangerous and could have had fatal outcomes. It's interesting to note that originally it was Nick who was supposed to run through little Rodentia, but they changed it. Probably because of that reason. Nick would just have looked too selfish that he cared more about himself not getting caught, over the lives of all the rodents. Some have pointed out that Nick selling wood to the mouse construction worker was amoral of him. I don't see it that way. If you look into the background of the construction site, it is very clear that all the load-bearing wood beams are much bigger in overall size than the wooden sticks Nick is selling. I'm pretty sure, they're only going to be used on the facade or in some other non-essential application. The mouse was probably complaining about the color because now he has to use 2 extra layers of paint to cover it up. Going back to Nick and Duke, they could have been working together at some point. But during a con, Nick would have frozen up and couldn't go through with what he was supposed to do. The young Nick had finally found his own limits and at the same time Nick would have seen Duke for what he really was. In short, Nick sees Duke as unscrupulous, someone without principles whereas Duke sees Nick as a softie and a wimp. Again, it's a really neat drawing. As for his size, it's hard to tell. Slightly smaller than Judy? I think. Strangely enough, real weasels are way, tinier than Duke is. Duke is pretty much a mutant, in comparison. (Okay, all Zoot characters are, technically, but you know what I mean :) )

Ooh, I like that idea a lot! Thanks for your input on the size too!

I always imagined it was jealousy on the part of Weaselton, who knows Nick is a much better con mammal than he could ever be. As for Nick, maybe... contempt? To him, Duke is the lowest common denominator for scam artists. In Nick's mind, he is David Copperfield, and Duke is a phone book magician who performs at kid's birthday parties. Also, I love the size difference. It's part of what made the world really come alive to me, and something that irks me a little in some fan art. When an artist will draw Nick and Judy as basically the same height, it just... doesn't look right.

Thank you Cas!! <3 And thanks for your input on size - I might make him just a teeensy lil bit bigger. And yes, omg, that’s exactly it. Defending their turf, haha. Perfect.

I personally think the size is great. In the Little Rodentia chase scene we see Judy being pretty comparable size-wise with a weasel, so it stands to reason Duke would be of similar proportions. <3

Even before reading the post I thought, hey, Nick looks like Pinkman!!! Very nice work! I love this concept. They almost look like they are defending their terf! I do think that Weaselton is just a hair too short but not by much. I actually really like the size differance between these two.

Quick note, I’d love people’s feedback on this before I start the line work: do you guys think I made Weaselton too small? It’s so difficult to tell their proportions since they’re not put right next to each other at any point in the movie (i don’t think??) He looked smaller than Judy, so, no idea...
