Keep in mind that the only person who currently knows (perhaps "believes" would be more apt) that Hikaru is dead or a monster is Yoshiki. (The housewife hasn't seen Hikaru as a monster and we didn't even hear the actual story Yoshiki told her, we just assume he told her that "Hikaru is a monster" but we don't have actual evidence of that. For all we know he could have told her he found Hikaru wearing high heels and lipstick and because she doesn't like that she goes on a rant about the strange evil presences lurking in the village lmao, this would also make sense with how I explain how I think humans think later in this comment; we intuitively attribute what we can't understand to supernatural interference) Yoshiki hasn't been able to sleep well for months and has trouble at home as well as with accepting his sexuality. If we are to consider how this story would map onto our world where such monsters don't exist, it feels very plausible that much of what we are seeing that can't be explained can be thought of as hallucinatory projections of Yoshiki's unwell mind. I imagine that Yoshiki always thought of Hikaru as straight and maybe even had accepted that his feelings would never be reciprocated, so it would only make sense if he was suddenly presented with a Hikaru who might not be straight to think "there must be a monster possessing him, maybe like the one on the mountain we all hear about as kids". Is this possibly Yoshiki just not being able to accept that Hikaru might actually like him back now? Maybe, but I am not sure either. The evidence is all subtextual and also does a kind of psychological horror to the interpreter of the story, leaving them unsure if they're making things up or not seeing "reality as it is" (which is also a theme overall, since society does this to queer people about their own existence, e.g., "you're just confused", "it's just a stage", "you're possessed by the devil", and so on.) I think the strongest horror aspect for myself when viewing is that all of our sources of information are highly biased, incomplete, and possibly distorted, but are presented as truth, which is also how humans experience reality. We think we know exactly what's happening and when things don't make sense or don't add up based on our understanding, we naturally attribute that not to our own distortions of reality and lack of knowledge, but to some entity or cause outside of ourselves, like a monster, a god, a devil, or another human. Just food for thought 🍧

2025-07-29 11:08:56 +0000 UTCI'm on the same page. When I saw that ending scene with him basically praying to the god of the mountain to keep Yoshiki safe, I was in tears. That's so sad and the comment about the family disowning their son... Man... this episode really hit hard. I'm loving this show...

2025-07-29 04:37:39 +0000 UTCIt wasn’t Yoshiki they called diseased right? I read it as it was their neighbor’s son. But I guess he would feel hurt by proxy, since he is unsure about his orientation. Human Hikaru is by all evidence, straight (he talks about getting girlfriends, is turned on by the tree in the shape of a woman’s body etc). Meanwhile Yoshiki is by all evidence, gay or bi. One of the really messed up parts about this show is that the only time Yoshiki feels like his feelings for Hikaru are reciprocated is when a monster imposter takes the shape of his love interest. However, that monster doesn’t want him, it wants to stay close to that flame that I assume is Yoshiki’s soul. It does care for him to some extent because of Hikaru’s fond platonic memories and the desire to protect his friend, but still not in a romantic way. I think this plays a major part in why Yoshiki is so ready to play pretend with the monster. Because he mistakes the monster’s desperation to be close to him as his feelings being awnsered. It adds so much to the psychological horror aspect of the show.
