Madoka Magica: Rebellion

holy hell WHAT A MOVIE

i'm conflicted about that ending but this was genuinely a work of art. can't wait for the next movie YAYAYAYAY

Comments

My theory is that turning into a witch in her labyrinth corrupted her, and so when Madoka reached out to help, it was the corrupted Homura who reached back.

Magnasium

Toxic, ambiguously queer duo for the win

Agreed as well, I would suggest playing the game that it’s based off of but, as we all sadly know, it’s offline. Madoka magica Exedra does have the arc in it or you can react to videos of the story segments (like Christal did for P4arena) but whatever works better for the channel

The moment Homura decided she wasn't going to let Madoka go back to being a God, was when they were sitting on the field and Madoka said that leaving her would be so painful she wouldn't be able to bear it. That made Homura realize she made a mistake letting it happen the first time and that Madoka wasn't really happy with the decision (even if that's not really true). That combined with the realization at the end that Kyubey wasn't going to stop until they could control Madoka was what drove her to that point.

I think this is one that you need to let sit and try to really understand Homura's point of view and trajectory. When I first watched this I had a really hard time accepting the ending but the more I watched this movie and let it sit the more I grew to understand and love the ending. I am part of the #homuradidnothingwrong club now πŸ˜…. Loved your reactions to this, I subbed on patron for this show and it was so worth it.

Hadn't watched this movie since I saw it in theaters over a decade ago, and I vividly remember leaving the theater absolutely hating it. At the time, the ending left such a bad taste that it actually soured my view of the entire series. I was so put off that I didn't even think about the series for years afterward. Coming back to it now during this series+movie rewatch, and with low expectations, I'm struck by how completely my perspective has shifted. I'm surprised that I actually love the ending now, and I've come to appreciate the series even more. This has made me hyper aware of how much I've changed over the years where I used to crave neat, closed narratives, I now find myself being able to not only understand but fully embrace open-ended storytelling that leaves room for interpretation and imagination. Crazy how that works. Thank you for the reaction Alana!

Mazo

i definitely will (and ill try to upload my reaction to them here!)

One of my favorite movies. I remember the film being very divisive among fans when it came out. It's still sort of is, but I believe overtime it became much more accepted by fans. I do think the film requires multiple viewings as it's a lot to digest the first time. Knowing the twist at the end, there's definitely a lot to dissect regarding Homura. For me the film recontextualizes her character. After the series I think a lot of people painted Homura as this unsung hero who can do no wrong, when in reality she's a sad, broken girl with deep self-loathing, much like the rest of the cast. Might be weird to say, but I've always interpreted that last scene as the first time in forever that Homura felt truly happy about herself. You're definitely meant to feel conflicted about her actions, but for me that's what makes her so much more interesting. This film solidified Homura as one of my favorite characters. I understand how people would find this "unnecessary", but for me the film enriches the series. I still think the show ended perfectly, though, and people can still choose to ignore this film if they feel.

I think this is a work that will be met with mixed reviews, but Homura took action to protect Madoka from Kyubey. It all started when Madoka placed her hopes in Homura, asking her to "help her" and "not forget." I think it's only natural that a distortion would arise from there. There are currently two teasers available, so be sure to check them out.

PMMM is one of my favorite series of all time. I watched as it aired. I bought the outrageously expensive BD/DVD combo release Aniplex out out. I imported figures and bought storyboard books. I thought the show had a perfect ending. I never watched the film until now. And I wish I never had. I don't remember the last time I was this disappointed in a piece of media.

Yeah, that's what I meant when I said this was divisive, some peoplefelt like she acted way out if character, I think ultimately it's just that homura is really, really damaged, out of all the magical girls she went through everything in the series, then she's set up as this kind of experiment by Kyubey, it's not that I like her less...I more feel a great deal of sympathy for her, she got to the point where she felt she had no option but to trap everyone in an illusion so that she could have one moment of stability and happiness. She strikes me as one of the most human of the characters, got pushed to the point she felt she had to set herself up as the evil to madoka's good just to have anything to hold on to The trailers for the new movie look incredible too, really looking forward to it.

PLEASE watch all of the teasers and trailers that have come out!!!

One of the best anime movies ever! Now you're officially one of us Madoka fans! πŸ˜… Oh, and I stan even harder for Homura after the movie lol She did nothing wrong imo. Your understanding is correct about Kyubey at the end. It seems he now has "feelings" particularly fear which you can see in his eyes, with his race having to deal with all the curses now.
