The whole theme of Shishitoren (at least the main guys we meet) is lost children. They have no one to guide them through the struggles of growing up and life, and as a result, they get misguided by their feelings. Umemiya recognised that the moment he spoke to Choji back in ep4, which together with this episode only serves as another proof of how incredibly high EQ he has. And Nii-sensei portrayed it all so beautifully.
