Re: why someone might want to introduce abortifacients in the rear palace: a large part of the value in being a concubine is in the potential to become the empress and bear the crown prince. Like, that's really the prize in the competition here: to be the mother (or maternal grandfather) of the next emperor, and thus secure influence over them for your family. To that end, preventing any of the other concubines from bearing male children (or getting rid of any that they do carry to term) is a major advantage. Next best thing to killing off the competition (which tends to be harder to pull off subtly- miscarriages are easier to write off as bad luck than otherwise healthy adult women suddenly dying).

2025-02-15 14:44:34 +0000 UTCThe scene at the end with the Emperor felt more to me like he was contemplating something, like maybe he had something in mind maybe for Maomao to do, or to help with. My other thought is that maybe, since he knows everything, he's seeing her value as a partner for his son. I'm sure he knows Jinshi cares for her, just about everyone there knows, lol! Guess we'll find out! Can't wait to see where this goes! :) Thanks!
