Kyoko's story is very sad and tragic. She was alone and mistreated her whole life and when she finally found someone that would love her and treat her with respect, she loses him out of nowhere. The whole age gap and power dynamic is very problematic and iffy but I appreciate that although it is a bad thing, he really did care for her and was there for her through it all. The relationship was in the end, good for both of them as he was finally able to connect and make mends with his father and Kyoko was able to have a loving family that cared about her. It is heartbreaking to see how depressed she was after he passed and how this triggered Tohru's reaction to immitate her father so "if she looked more like him perhaps her mother would not go away". It is interesting that although Tohru sayd she is not like her father and only speaks like him through the imitation, there are a lot of similatiries on how they behave. Katsuya was really lonely and lived life by pretending and hidding his feelings, playing a part in society as it was expected of him. Tohru in a weay does the same thing, as she puts the facade of a happy girl but she was lonely and hurting. They are also similar in their placitude and easy-going personality and I think it is quite sad that she grew up not knowing or realizing this because of trauma. The Kyoru moments in the end!!!!!! I died. They are too wholesome for my soul to handle it.

2025-01-13 14:12:15 +0000 UTCAkito is in her early 20s (so 20-23 years old) and Shigure is 28. I picked in the middle. The gap doesn't really change depending on Akito's exact age.

2025-01-08 01:42:33 +0000 UTCIts hard to really remember just how common and romanticized age gap & student teacher relationships were in old school shoujo... So its a product of its time. Still emotional & impactful.

2025-01-07 19:33:59 +0000 UTCAkitos age is never confirmed in the manga, beyond being in her early 20s. Any specific ages or birthdays given are from the 2001 anime data book, which Natsuki Takaya has said is not canon (especially since Akito is male in the OG anime). So, we don't know if the age gap b/t her & Shigure really is THAT big or not...

2025-01-04 14:38:44 +0000 UTCI figured it would happen, but I wanted to ask, when did you stop hating Akito? I know the revelations were gradual and you might not have noticed any specific moment, unless it was the Great Reveal, but I remember you said you hated them early on.

2025-01-04 06:47:57 +0000 UTCThe volume that told this backstory (16 I think) was what got me into manga almost 16 years ago 😭 a friend in middle school brought it in and we all passed it around and cried over it all day 🥲 I got it at recess lol. The age difference did not really phase me at the time, but now its more 😬 regardless, after that I started the series and was hooked ever since! I’ve really appreciated your watch through, you had a lot of good insight I never picked up on when I was younger.

2025-01-04 05:32:25 +0000 UTCI've always felt uncomfortable with Kyoko and Katsuya's relationship since reading the manga ngl. But knowing that the manga was written in 1998 and the author's love for age-gap relationships, i just tried to turn my brain off on some of the stories 😭 Still one of my fav animanga tho 🫶🏻

2025-01-04 01:40:24 +0000 UTCYeah it's common knoweldge. I understand. Genereally speaking, there isn't a consensus on what you describe as an "issue", is all I meant. I would be surprised if the author of fruits basket changed her opinion on this topic after all these years, but who knows.

2025-01-03 23:43:02 +0000 UTCI know the author is a woman? I was just speaking generally.

2025-01-03 23:31:45 +0000 UTCIt's not written as an inherent issue in this story by the author, and I think it's important to point out the writer of Fruits Basket is a women. People's opinions, especially internationally, range widely on the topic of age gap relationships.

2025-01-03 23:04:00 +0000 UTCI think - especially when the story was first coming out, which was back in the 90s - there was a fairly prevalent cultural perception that it was a good idea for women to want an older man who has the means to take care of them. This isn't/wasn't just true in Japan of course, idk if anyone else read Tamora Pierce books, but some of hers (coming out in the 90s) had several age gap relationships that weren't really remarked on at the time, especially within a fictional setting. We're a lot more aware of it as an issue now, and discuss it more, which is good.

2025-01-03 22:57:34 +0000 UTCAge gap relationships are clearly something this author is very interested in and passionate about. Kyoko (15) and Katsuya (23) in this movie, Akito (21) and Shigure (28), and Uotani (17) and Kureno (26) in the anime.

2025-01-03 22:29:18 +0000 UTCYeah, I uh…understand being thrown off by certain aspects of this one 😬 I usually don’t recommend it to people since it’s pretty much just supplementary material anyway, but I always cry at the end too.
