She has had a lot of traumas and was lonely for most of her life and went through to push all her feelings down so she could "play pretend" so she could keep her mother close without risking worrying her and with how long she put the effort in keeping that behavior she ended up doing the same, hiding her feelings and emotions from everyone around her. The sheet scene has always been one of my favorites because of how supportive Kyo is to her and that makes Tohru finally open and give her emotions and thoughts away. She is, as you pointed out, also tied to a bond almost like a mirror image of the zodiac members and Akito as well.
