Trying not to tear up watching this show is impossible. In many stories where the protagonist's parents are dead, said parents are very much an afterthought, a way for that character to do whatever with little to no supervision. And/or a reason for their anger and angst. Kyoko is *not* that. Every flashback with her, every conversation where a character gives advice she might have, just drives home how much of a loss the death of this vibrant, supportive, and wise person really was. She altered the trajectory of Uo's life, giving her a soft place to land when she needed it the most. You cannot help but think that if she were still around, she'd either have a bunny on her lap, a rat riding around on her shoulder, or a grouchy, flustered, and reluctantly pleased cat in her arms. I do love that, in the here and now, Uo's home life seems to have improved immensely. Her father is drinking less, their apartment is clean, she's not brushing off his attempts at care, and she's caring for him in return. Kyoko's impact rippling out.
