After directing the first two seasons of SAO, he asked the studio if he could direct a manga he was obsessed with. They of course said yes, but with the amount of episodes he was allowed it meant things had to be cut from the manga. I'd say the manga is more of a slow burn, for example, the ending of this episode where he goes back in time to his childhood happened like 6 months after the manga started
