about your comment at the end -> "they could have had so much more time together" (if the grandfather had let him marry her), they still had all that time together, even had a kid as it mentioned. they were always together basically married anyways, just not under law technically without the blessing. so they were always still together just not formally married, but the man continued to attempt to get his blessing anyways.
