As Tappei himself stated in a Q&A from around arc 3 time (season 1), someone asked "it looks like Rem is taking over/being more popular than the heroine" he said "the next 6 arcs will have Emilia as the heroine. Is that a problem?" lol I love how he responded

I love s2 for giving depth and development to her character! It’s hard to not love all these characters! Even beetlegeuse got some unexpected love!

2024-06-10 18:06:43 +0000 UTCFun fact: the moment where Emilia throws herself to the water and sees her reflection is the very first time she sees herself. It is made clearer that Emilia rejected looking at herself in the mirror (or any mirror surface really) because of her appearance after waking up from the ice, partly because, in her consciousness, she had grown from a child to an adult in a flash. In fact, to protect her, one of the clauses in the contract she had with Puck was that she would not look at her own reflection. But now that Puck's contract was forcibly broken, she finally could. Hence her reaction "I look less like Fortuna than I thought. Too bad."
