Also, Otto is the first friend that Subaru has made since coming to this world. The first one where there isn't romantic love, obligations, duty, debts, or a transactional mentality driving their connection. I think that is a big part of why Subaru was so slow to catch on and why he shed tears while laughing that he had never considered friendship being a possibility.
