She's an incredible character designer, and in supplemental books for the series she's published sheets and sheets of diverse character designs that she just did as world building exercises. It obviously pays off in how unique the background characters look

They've done Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Darling in the Franxx, Kill La Kill and BNA. Their style is one of a kind and in Episode 8 they really show it off.

His age isn't confirmed until later in the story, though, so for now you'll have to decide for yourself whether he's telling the truth about not being a child.
