His inner-monologue from the novels isn't adapted, but he cringes at himself half the time. They also do know what dates are in this world, Emilia just doesn't know what one is. A parallel can be drawn with how she doesn't understand what a date is and how the children don't either. She is also completely oblivious to the fact Subaru has a crush on her.

You'll learn a lot more about them (and everyone else) eventually. It's all meant to be a big mystery right now, so keep the theories coming!
