2024-03-03 01:28:57 +0000 UTCSign language tends to be direct, and the JSL is far more direct than Japanese and eliminates the feeler extras which are common in Japanese. It WOULD be weird if Itsu signed "or don’t you?" in JSL.

2024-03-03 01:09:49 +0000 UTCI don't think it's weird per se when spoken. However, because he does talk that way with Yuki, it may be revealing his own insecurity or uncertainties about being with a woman. Or even possibly the opposite, that he feels so comfortable with Yuki that he can talk that way (saying what's on his mind) with her.

2024-03-03 01:04:33 +0000 UTCRight, I thought so as well, but then he adds it to his texts... So it is weird if spoken? I know its weird as we're talking about sign language...

2024-03-02 23:43:41 +0000 UTCI thought again of that "you wanna go or not go" type talk by Itsu versus Yuki, and my hunch is that, other than being his style of speech, he may have been doing so in order to make sure that Yuki read his lips correctly. By adding "or you don't want to" it would give Yuki the chance to verify the context. Maybe. By the way, when he signs, he does not talk that way.

2024-03-02 21:28:35 +0000 UTCThanks, that's mostly what I figured. Maybe it's a translation issue then, but if I were to ask someone like: Do you want to go to this place, or do you not? It feels a bit like peer pressure or something. I have no issues to how Itsu speaks in general, it's just when he makes these suggestions to Yuki. Also I'm self-learning Japanese so I'm really lost as I understand that they speak in more casual manner.

2024-03-02 11:33:14 +0000 UTCThanks. I wish I could have had a JSL boot camp like those guys on the show before I got here (no chance in the U.S.). My sign language is really rusty.

2024-03-02 01:07:42 +0000 UTCShin is 100% my favorite character after this I was in his position a few years back when my best friend and the girl I was in love with were dating it honestly sucked being around them even though I cared for them both it was just really hard I wouldn’t wish that feeling on anyone

2024-03-02 01:05:49 +0000 UTCI understand that you have studied Japanese for a couple of years. What they typically do in teaching Japanese is that they stick you with a lot of "proper" Japanese, meaning that it's NOT the type of language friends and family use among themselves. Until you are sufficiently advanced, they usually play it safe by not bringing in the casual style which, if mishandled, can lead to a serious breach of the rather intricate and inflexible Japanese social etiquette.

2024-03-02 00:53:39 +0000 UTCA Japanese speaker here. I am not certain about your misgivings regarding Itsuomi's manner of speech. Given the setting of the story and his relationship with other characters, he talks informally in kinda matter-of-fact style, which is perfectly acceptable. I have read the whole manga in Japanese, and nothing of the way Itsu speaks jumped out as anything unusual or improper. Regarding the "shinai?" line, because it is done on LINE, where most everyone speaks in more or less truncated/compact ways, not to mention some people communicating mainly via stickers, it's 100% normal (even off LINE it would be fine given the context).

2024-03-02 00:49:18 +0000 UTCLove the backstory with Shin + Emma, really gives a new perspective to their characters especially Shin. I don't know why it took me so long to realize that Emma's VA is Nao Touyama (Yui Yuigahama from Oregairu and Tomoe Koga from Rascal Bunny Girl Senpai). I also figured out my issue with Itsuomi. I have only studied Japanese for a little over 2 years, but the way he says "do you want to do this, or do you not" sounds...dumb. Maybe some Japanese speakers can help me out, if this is normal (like at the end of this episode he shows Yuki the text about the boot camp and it has the shinai at the end).
