They don't have mind, they just perfectly replicate what their mind would do. Spiegel is controlling them to protect itself, so that's why they are fighting. Sense might be pacifist, but she knows how to fight and if necessary she will fight to kill. She just doesn't like putting people in circumstances were innocent people/talented mages might die. She sees it as simply a waste and unnecessary. There are other ways of testing people that don't force them into life and death situations. Though one has to take into account that "first-class mage" is the highest rank among mages. They have to be capable of dealing with anything. Hence why "first class" mage exam is much more... dangerous than other tests. After all it is completely voluntary to enter.
