If you pause in that moment, you can see Serie's silhouette on Frieren. She said magic is world of visual imagination, so I believe Frieren needed to visualize the person who created the barrier in order to destroy it.

2024-02-16 16:35:30 +0000 UTCI was wondering why Flamme or Serie couldn’t beat the demon king but this episode cleared it up for me. Magic is all about visualization, and just like how Richter couldn’t visualize beating Kanne and Lawine, Flamme and Serie couldn’t visualize themselves beating the demon king and entering an era of peace.
