You really should get back into this show and give it a better shot. It really is cute when you look at it through the fact that it very much tells the story through the eyes of junior high kids. The cringe is very understandable from that perspective.

I’m really surprised she hasn’t gotten to watch Fruba yet. Absolute peak of the genre imo.

2023-09-07 18:42:31 +0000 UTCThis is in my top 3 romcoms of all time along with Kaguya-Sama and My Dress-Up Darling. I see that you're one of those people that get freaked out by the first episodes, but even those are very well made in my opinion. Saying these are super cringe or anything like that is discrediting the writing in my opinion, they genuinely have amazing moments and everything makes sense. The way these characters are written is incredibly realistic and I can relate to a lot of it from my own early teenage years. Just keep in mind that this is supposed to be a realistic portrayal of middle schoolers so that's what you're gonna get. One problem is also that a lot of the reasons this show is amazing are, for example, how subtly things progress and how smooth it all feels. There's a lot of little details that many people just simply seem to miss, and I don't want to gatekeep or anything if people still enjoy the show anyways, but it does make me sad to see sometimes when stuff gets overlooked.

2023-09-07 18:19:05 +0000 UTCTechnically I would say what you said about Ichikawa is a spoiler but because people get incredibly weirded out by the first few episodes because they take it way too seriously instead of viewing it comedically like I think the show actually wants you to, I think it's fair to already mention it here. There's so much good stuff in the first episodes but people just will simply not pay attention to them in favour of being creeped out by an edgy 13 year old

So it's My Dress-Up Darling, but the characters are younger, dumber, and the MC's weird passion/coping mechanism is true crime instead of hina dolls. Guess that means you'll end up loving this show!

2023-09-07 15:06:09 +0000 UTCAnd not just edgy, but very socially awkward. As you get further into the show, it becomes clear that he's not really a creepy weirdo--that's just his defense mechanism. He plays the role of the creepy weirdo to get people at school to leave him alone. That's a minor spoiler, I guess, but I think it's one that's worth dropping because the first episode or two really hits you hard with the whole "protagonist is a creepy weirdo" thing, which can be very off-putting, and you don't get the additional context until later. I do think the show is worth sticking with; it gets a lot better.

However, it’s gets way better from episode 4. I finally started to see why people were calling it cute. I still think you would like my happy marriage better tho.

But you definitely picked up on the fact that the cringe nature of these characters is because they are Middle schoolers. One thing that really stands out even from the First Ep and continues in quality throughout the series is the Music, composed by the same person that did Chainsaw Man and A Silent Voice.

If you can pay attention to small details and like to think a bit deeper about some parts of a show, the viewing experience will be extremely rewarding.
