2023-05-16 11:32:55 +0000 UTCI'll try to be as succinct as I can. The slap on the face and "I don't want to lose my connection to her". Here we finally get the answer to why Hachiman prevented Yukino from becoming student council president back in season 2: he was afraid he'd lose his connection to her if she won. And everything else we heard from him since then, from "man's pride", to "responsibility", to even "wanting something genuine", were just excuses he hid behind so as not to admit the plain truth: that he just wanted to be with her. And that also explains his mistake back then: he didn't realize Yukino would have invited him to the student council anyway so they could remain together. Or, in other words, he was afraid she wouldn't want to keep their connection, so he didn't trust her to do so. Which is also why Yukino's "if it's so easy to break us apart, maybe we weren't so close after all" hits so hard and feels like a breakup. Because she trusted their connection, but Hachiman didn't, so she came to doubt it as well. Also, as others have said, more than a "confession", the wording of this scene really says "proposal", thanks to the whole "I'll give you my life" and several other lines. And this was actually foreshadowed in the last episode of season 2. Hachiman, Yukino and Yui go on a date together, and there's a scene where everyone gets a little uncomfortable when they see the penguins and read that "they stay together until one of them dies". The not so subtle implication is that everyone realizes Hachiman and Yukino are like those penguins, and that once they get together they'll stay together forever (so that "confession"="proposal"). Which makes the trio uncomfortable because there's no room for Yui in that picture. To me the saddest thing about Yui's role in the story is that she's so important in allowing Hachiman and Yukino to get along and grow closer, which is something she genuinely *wants* to happen, but she also feels like there's no room left for her in the end.

2023-05-16 01:03:32 +0000 UTCHachiman speech in this episode is one of the best confessions in anime out there, at least for me and one of those few memorable moments that you always remember when you think about a series like the stargazing ep in Bakemonogatari or the conclusion of the christmas arc in Kaguya sama.

2023-05-16 00:33:18 +0000 UTCThe bridge scene is one of the best confessions ever! Truly wonderful and in character for Hachiman and Yukino. It's a pity that Feel cutted so much content from their interactions but still, the bridge scene was soooo great.
