love this episode! hachiman's internal overnight monologue is one of my favorites of the series, and watching him muster his courage and be honest with them about what he wants always makes me tear up. also, it kills me how terrified yukino is of his words--the way she clutches herself, the way she runs out the door like she's being chased and slams it behind her...like it's hard for me to be frustrated with her here bc she's just SO scared

My favorite episode of the series 😮‍💨

samuel

My viewpoint on understanding the content within this episode.

really love the scene with the teacher. She's such a big support for hachiman and making him realize what he had trouble with realizing himself. Especially how serious the whole conversation was in contrast to how the scenes with the teacher usually are

This is such an important episode in the show. The teacher's speech, the club room scene and the one afterwards are all so amazing. I love the detail that Hatchiman finally chose to sit right in front of them for this. Even the way they were usually sitting on the table was telling a lot about them. Btw this is some crazy good timing because today it's the 10th year anniversary of the anime. They released a very nice special video for the occasion on youtube.

Hachiman's desire for something genuine. It wasn't about having friendship, a romance relationship or even being understood by others.. he wants to understand others. Because not understanding is what scares him most. His assumptions and misunderstanding of people's feelings and intentions are what got him hurt in the first place, which is where his cynical shell and skewed perception of people and relationships came from. This episode is about him reflecting and realizing that deep down even with his cynical perceptions and stubborn justifications for his loneliness... he does desire a connection with someone. A connection where he can understand them. Without any facades, hidden intentions and feelings. Its a selfish desire as he said, but its what he wants. That is him being genuine. His talk with sensei made him realize it isn't gonna be easy to have that FULL understanding of people that he desires. People are complicated and have a tendency to lie and hide their true feelings the closer they become cos they don't want to hurt each other. Hachiman, Yukino and Yui all participated in this behavior. Hachiman realized it when he took note of the fact that he used the excuse of "doing it for Komachi" as his reason to act in helping Iroha with her issue of the council president election. Naah the truth is deep down he may have done it for the stability of the service club, or more specifically... for Yukino personally as sensei mentioned. Its gonna be harder to find that "genuine" connection if even they don't know or understand what they want. We know what Hachiman wants from this relationship now, but what do they want? What can you even call a genuine connection? Are the feelings that you express even your true feelings? At the end of the day, it isn't gonna be easy to understand. Relationships aren't easy. There will be a multitude of hurts, misunderstandings and different ways of communicating their feelings. But that's life. Its gonna take time. That is what having a strong relationship is about after all. You work on your communication, your trust in the other that they will understand and in turn communicate back how they feel in a way that will be understood by you. Alot to unpack in this episode alone. Its a fav of the series. Look forward to your future reactions to this story!

The monologue in this romcom is close to non, I really had to watch some episodes twice to understand. Like "bars" in a rap battle :)). Much love everyone!

i mean i think you nailed it. 8man realized he DOES want to be involved with these two in some way, but he has always viewed relationships similar to this as not genuine. so he has these two conflicting thoughts of like 'i know all relationships are fake and surface level, but I still want it. I feel these two are different and I want it, but true friendships like this don't exist'. We can't understand our emotions fully. 8man and his analytical brain can't comprehend the idea of what he is even feeling, but he still felt the need to pour his soul out for these two because things reached a breaking point. he wasn't even sure what he was saying, but he felt in his heart he had to do something. he doesn't want to lose this, whatever 'this' is. also im sure i could be wrong too. this story has a lot of feelings swirling about so there are a ton of interpretations.

It's fine to not understand a lot of Hachiman's monologues, and the characters thoughts and feelings, even they don't fully understand lmao. Human emotions are complicated.

Ecodude

How would you describe this chapter?: Just perfect. This chapter shows you that with simple conversations, an anime can transmit a lot. Hachiman is one of the most interesting and deep characters I've ever met. Also, his evolution from the first chapter to that point is gigantic. I can't wait for you to see what's left of the 2nd season and the 3rd since from this chapter nothing will be the same for the characters.

Ikr? The new studio did such an amazing job with the facial expressions and body language of the characters, especially in this episode. This season 2 was produced 8 years ago and I think it hasn't aged even a bit, looks better than many other shows released recently.
