Yeah I think they didn't do a great job with explaining just HOW messed up Miyuki is from how his mother treated him. The manga really sells the anguish he puts himself through, it really makes you feel for him. These episodes are pretty good, but I think the adaptaion falls a little flat in places.

It might be one of my favorite panels in the manga, and the anime doesn't do it justice unfortunately. Very cool moment yet quite sad at the same time.
