When I first watched this episode it was funny at first but it became really frustrating. They just talk and push the work load to Iroha’s group. Fun fact I learned how to talk like them to pass my school presentations, it comes in handy

2023-04-01 03:15:00 +0000 UTCJust caught up here on patreon and wanted to talk about some nuances in the last chapter. There's a lot of subtlety to it that is easy to miss but I feel adds a lot to the narrative! There themes in the last episode were about needing a "reason" to act. Because they aren't willing to be honest about their true feelings or don't recognise them very well. The contrast between the more mature and immature characters on that subject are well done too. Hachiman won't admit to just wanting to spend time with the two of them. He needs a reason to hang out with them and that reason for him is the service club. He doesn't yet realise that what he's doing is protecting their "reason" to be together and avoiding the real issue. That is admitting that they want to be together at all. Komachi loves her brother so she recognises that he needs a reason to keep them together so she gives him that reason. But she's also too young to realise that they could just be together anyway. Yukino is opposed to self-sacrifice and would never offer to become student council president if she didn't kind of want to. She wanted Hachiman to understand that as well. But she's also stuck and can't just pursue her desire without having a "reason"(Iroha's request) to do so . However she's also being a little evasive and avoiding her own desire to stay with her friends as well. She can't ask them to join with her. Yui as well feels the same and is actually quite honest about wanting to spend time with the two of them. But she also feels that they wouldn't be together without the service club. What really drives it home is that ending scene with a senior. The previous President who's a little older and more mature. She recognises that they really like each others company. She also seems to know Yukino wants to be the council President and she'd be great at it. It is obvious to her that their friendship and bond transcends their circumstances and they'd just be together again but in the Student Council instead of the service club. So while it seems Hachiman fixed the problem. Like the show alludes he doesn't deal with the real issue. Which is progressing their friendship (and maybe more). Recognising they like and want to be with each other. They don't need to have a reason for that. It's very well written immature characters which is a really hard thing to pull off. Most shows just write immature characters as stupid or not really trying. But in reality people try and their immaturity isn't a result of not trying or being stupid. They haven't realised certain things yet so they run into obvious walls that anyone more mature can recognise.

They made it kinda funny to watch but also extremely frustrating which is supposed to be. After all their clashes and debates it's pretty sad to see Yukino look so defeated and like she's given up. She wanted to be student council president but it was all to prove something too.
