I actually wish I hadn't figured it out - took away a major part of the enjoyment for the episode.

No no I totally get how it’s obvious, just saying that I wasn’t really paying enough attention

I kinda hated myself for my mind becoming rather clinical and for figuring out early on that it was obvious that these letters were for Ann's birthdays. It did not help, either, that I had heard about real-life individuals doing the same thing, if not for 50 years. One celebrated real-life case in Japan had a dying mother recording a well-wishing video for her daughter's wedding, which was played years after the mother's death when the wedding did happen. To me, it was so clear that the letters were for the little girl because there was no way for a dying mother to take that much time and energy crafting letters (and being rather guarded about them too) but for her most precious presence, the little Ann. And since it was a lot of writing, I deduced, like real-life examples, that they had to be for Ann's birthdays. My tears in this episode were for the little girl's anguish as well as that of Violet.

I basically figured out what the deal was the moment I saw Violet talk to the mother for the first time and I still cried buckets so for me personally I don't think that knowledge really makes any difference for how emotional it was

For me, the biggest "got hit by a truck" moment in the VE franchise came when, in June 2020, Shouchiku/KyoAni released the full trailer for Violet Evergarden: the Movie. We all knew that this second movie was coming, but together with many thousands of VE fans, upon seeing this trailer, I exclaimed "What the actual...?!" which could not be completed because my jaw fell off and joined all those jaws of other people who had seen the same trailer, all rolling on the floor.

Vez que miro este capituló me duele 😭😭😭 saludos desde Chile

A terrible day for rain ;__;

I think there's only one other letter for me of this anime that's as sad as these.

Argentos

This is one of the best anime episodes I've ever seen. I was so dumb I did not realize who she was writing those letters to until they revealed it, that is why this episode hit me even harder.

Harappa

"it breaks my heart, but it also puts it together again" - felt.

Mark Masangkay

This really that episode that drained me lmfaooo we a crying mess today 🤣 I'm avoiding to rewatch this but for Alana's reaction I have tooo

halfeldian

"toughest reactors on Youtube" hell yes! I watch A Goodwin TV he barely cries in a lot of emotional scenes unless the characters are impactful BUT even when he guessed whose letters are these for he was still a crying mess lmao. I think even tho you can tell where the story is heading it's still gonna make you emotional

halfeldian

It wasn't tough to deduce that, since (a) the little Ann was the most important person in the life of Mrs. Magnolia; (b) those letters were clearly not for business purposes (why hire a doll like Violet for legal and financial docs?); and (c) they were obviously voluminous and needed to be painstakingly crafted by keeping Violet all week. I was rather confident right away that those were for Ann's birthdays, which is something that I have heard some real-life people facing death have also done for their children.

jacksan1

Even if you know she's getting the letters, when you realize the magnitude of the task and how it keeps going and she gets older and is STILL getting letters is really powerful.

Jake Thompson

I wondered why it didn’t hit Alana harder in that scene, but this explains it. I for example didn’t even think that far when I first watched it and it hit me like a truck.

Other anime episodes have made me tear up a little, but this episode made me cry fr

David

I'm like Alana too as I also had figured out early on when I watched it for the first time that those letters HAD to be for the little girl, so when the truth was revealed, my reaction was more of "I knew it!" I cried a lot more when Violet was out with the girl and telling her that there was nothing that could be done, just as her skin would never be soft like the little Ann's. How heartbreaking it must have been for such a young child to have to face the brutal truth. And I cried with Violet after she got back to the CH office.

jacksan1

I bet the first and last letter was the hardest ones to write😭😭

Kalm

Had the same reaction as you. I even said “fuck” at the end of the episode. Idk, I like sad emotional stuff; it makes me feel human.

Justin Navarrete

Yeah this is one of my favorite reactions to look up, I'll admit I'm a LITTLE sad that she figured out the letters were for Ann because the really devastating ones are the people who don't see it coming and then all of a sudden they're like, OMG THEY'RE FOR HER

OctaviusLee

Lol this episode broke even some of the toughest reactors I’ve seen on YT, the majority of the anime community also agree that this is one of the saddest anime episodes ever. I think it’s amazing writing when they can make us feel so much emotions for these characters that we’ve only met for 25 mins

An Q.

Here we go! Been waiting for this one! Haha. Edit: Yep, now I'm all sniffly and my head hurts, I always text something to my mom after I watch this episode.

OctaviusLee

Hell yeah, just in time to watch before I go to bed, you are the greatest Alana, thanks!
