2024-03-21 11:20:08 +0000 UTCThe big take away from this episode was that Hachiman fought to protect the wrong thing. He wanted to protect the club as an excuse for him, Yukino, and Yui to stay together. That was misguided. Because had Yukino become the president, they could have stayed together regardless. Essentially, he didn't believe their bond was strong enough to survive a big change like that so he sought to protect the status quo, but by doing so deprived Yukino an opportunity for growth. It's sad that things become obvious in hindsight.

2023-05-07 15:14:09 +0000 UTCI love how well the author writes their characters' maturity levels. The previous president being more well lived, understands that what they have is their desire to be together and that's more than enough. Even if Yukino became the President they could just, tag along because that's what you do. You spend time with the people you care about. Hachiman and Yui are understandably young and very tunnel visioned. Instead of realising that what they truly have (their relationship and bond), they desperately try to protect their "reason" to act. Their "reason" to stay friends. Which is the service club. Komachi loves her brother and voices to him his own desire to stay with the group because she sees he needs a reason to act. But she's not exactly a grown up either and isn't able to recognise that what's really important is the bond in and of itself. Not the place they occupy. Yukino is opposed to self-sacrifice and would never offer to become student council president if she didn't kind of want to. She wanted Hachiman to understand that as well. But she's also stuck and can't just pursue her desire without having a "reason"(Iroha's request) to do so . However she's also being a little evasive and avoiding her own desire to stay with her friends as well. She can't ask them to join with her. It's very well written immature characters which is a really hard thing to pull off. Most shows just write immature characters as stupid or not really trying. But in reality people try and their immaturity isn't a result of not trying or being stupid. They haven't realised certain things yet so they run into obvious walls that anyone more mature can recognise.

2023-04-01 00:35:07 +0000 UTCI really like that you pointed out that Yukino is opposed to Hachiman's self-sacrificing ways. We see the story through Hachiman's eyes so it's easy for us to just assume Yukino is sacrificing herself by running for President but in reality it's something she wants. It's doubly extra interesting because of the reason to act thing towards the end. They couldn't imagine that they don't need a reason to just spend time with each other (they are kids I suppose). They're all using the service club as their "reason" to spend time with each other. And we can see the contrast so clearly with the previous President who is more mature. She understands that even if they are not in the service club anymore, they like each other's company and they can continue to be together. Yukino can achieve what she wants (stepping out of her sisters shadow or what have you), and they can understand their relationships transcend simple circumstances. In that sense while Hachiman's solution seemed to protect what they had. In reality, what they had never needed any protecting, he was only protecting their "reason", their excuse to hang out with each other. Avoiding the real issue, which is their inability to admit they just like hanging out and being friends ( or more than friends ).

2023-04-01 00:22:57 +0000 UTCYukino "wanted" to become Student council president. It has been made clear that Yukino used to follow Haruno around and get her hand-me-downs. The student council presidency would have been her opportunity to step out of her sisters shadow. Something that most people in the comments here seem to overlook is the monolog Hachiman has towards the end of the episode; Some people can only act if they are given an outside reason to do so, even if it's something they actually want. Hachiman Parallels this: Hachiman, although he can't quite admit it to himself at the beginning of the episode, has grown rather fond of the service club and wants to protect it, but he too is one of those people that needs an outside reason. That outside reason in his case is Komachi asking him to protect the club because she likes Yui and Yukino. it's not been made clear in the show by this point but Komachi is aiming to go to the same school as Hachiman, thus wanting the club to be around so she can also join. The show neglects to mention it but its first mentioned in Volume 4 (Summer camp arc). Thus, Komachi gave Hachiman the outside reason to act. In Yukino's case her outside reason was the request by Iroha. She wanted the position from the beginning and she likely already made the decision that she would go for it before Haruno ever provoked her into it; after all, Episode 2x3 is called "Quietly, Yukinoshita Yukino makes a decision" however her confrontation with Haruno only happens an Episode later. Also, and this should have made it obvious that she actually wanted to be president: Yukino is categorically opposed to Hachimans Method of scapegoating himself, and she would never use such a method herself. In other words, even if it were to solve a problem, she wouldn't have nominated herself if she hadn't actually wanted it. The debate isn't about whether or not Yukino wanted to genuinely run for the presidency, the question is her reason why: did she want the position for the sake of the position, or did she want it because Haruno didn't run for president and it would have been a way for her to step out of Haruno's shadow.

2023-03-31 19:06:44 +0000 UTCChange in this series is pretty interesting and almost true to real life. It doesn't just go one direction upward or downward. Nor does it take one event to make a massive lasting change. We change bit by bit. Sometimes we regress back to old habits, sometimes we just keep pushing forward. What's important to understand is that it ALL is a part of the journey. Even when we fall and regress.. we just need to get back up again and move forward.

2023-03-31 18:41:24 +0000 UTCI really like that Hachiman development is not a sudden and complete 180, its true he want to change but is a process that is going to take more time.

2023-03-30 20:35:17 +0000 UTCThat is an interesting way to view it, but I disagree. I definitely believe Yukino was influenced by her sister's words and is trying to set her own path. But I don't think its that she doesn't want to do it at all. The way I see it, Yukino believes their connection to be so strong and genuine that she honestly thought the change to student council wouldn't change their relationship at all. Just as (I forgot her name lol) the ex-council president said. Their dynamics and roles in the council would be no different from how they were in the service club. Hachiman sabotaging the president election communicates to Yukino that he doesn't trust their connection to be genuine and strong enough to adapt to change, that he doesn't believe in her own capabilities to be an effective council president... and that he doesn't trust her and Yui enough to even let them know what he is doing. Him continuing to go down this rabbit hole and choosing to shoulder it all alone is just gonna contunue to hurt the people he cares about.

2023-03-30 19:53:18 +0000 UTCI think it wasn’t that Yukinon actually wanted to be the council president, but more so that she’s disappointed in Hikki very obviously so going behind their backs again and doing it himself instead of getting them involved. She must be relived to not let the club die.
this is one long ass username
2023-03-30 18:56:46 +0000 UTCWhen I watched this episode the first time years ago; it took me a while to understand what 8man accidentally did. He changed a outcome that would have improved the service club to a whole new level. This is the first time he is understanding of what his decisions are causing to others. The conversation between him and sister was very sweet and comforting; she is right now the only person who can help him understand what needs to be done to keep everyone together. Do not worry about getting confused about the plot, it will take some time; but you will slowly start piecing everything together.

2023-03-30 02:54:36 +0000 UTCYup you pretty much got all the points down. You could also see Yukino's desire to be council president as her own way to show Hachiman that these problems can be resolved another way. To show he doesn't need to make himself a scapegoat anymore. But cos he went behind their backs and prevented her from making her move.. its all ruined now. It makes me think back to what Yui said to Hachiman after the fake confession in S2 episode 2. "You should think about how others feel!" These characters just need to communicate and that's the problem. They fear losing their connection so much almost seeing it as so fragile that one argument could break them up forever, that they think this is the only way to deal with it. By tip toeing around the issue instead of directly confronting it head on. Its almost sad.

2023-03-30 01:28:53 +0000 UTCHachiman: Will lie to help others and ensure ‘no one’ gets hurt, in order to keep things the same. Yukino: Will always tell the truth (Honesty) and ensure people learn from their experiences and growth. ‘Accepting’ the change. These seem to be relevant themes that keep coming up. Hachiman’s honest feelings were voiced by Komachi, being his sister and the relationship they have she’s able to know his inner thoughts before anyone and sometimes even himself. But ironically the point she hammers the most, “[talk to Yukino and Yui]” is the last thing Hachiman does….
