I'm fine with how the anime changed the story of the athletic festival. They threw out all the boring drama (clubs vs committee) and kept all the fun in. This was kind of the rehabilitation arc of Sagami, she kept it hidden who broke the rule and had a silent agreement with Hachiman to ignore each other's existence from there on out. Too bad the Yumiko part had to be cut as well due to it leaving the Sagami story out. On the topic of athletic festivals, I think those are crueler for the popular kids than the ones nobody knows. Zaimokuza here was pretty much the hero of the festival because nobody expected something from him. In my highschool I remember one sport festival, it was the last leg of a sprinting competition which was also was timed to give additional grades. The popular kid (grade-wide) I raced against knew I was faster from normal sport lessons, so he was pretty happy about me being there. Since it usually improves one's own time if one can follow someone. But then the crowd stopped cheering halfway into the race because it was clear he wouldn't win. I felt bad for him.
