Honestly wasn't a fan when I started it, took a couple watch attempts to get through the first few episodes. Though once Violet Evergarden clicked with me, it clicked hard.

2023-02-28 00:49:37 +0000 UTCYeah, and even for those shows that are labeled as "Netflix original," stories have been leaking out that some of those have actually been financed via a traditional production committee (production with 製作) model, with a stipulation in the contract that Netflix be permitted to claim that they are the one who solely paid for the creative production (制作) which isn't true. If the profit/risk sharing is good enough, there are media companies and studios who are willing to go with it. Neftlix got the dough, they create their own fantasy claim.

2023-02-25 22:12:20 +0000 UTCYou are right, and Well, it is true that there are some series with Netflix involvement in production (~40animes). That doesn't change that what they do is very misleading and kinda shit. Regarding VE, they deserve none of the credit for the show, they didn't produce, animate, or put any money, just licensing. To be more precise, in the production comitte were involved Lantis, Pony Canyon, Rakuonsha and ABC animation.

2023-02-25 21:07:00 +0000 UTCWhat sometimes confuses people is that in Japanese there are two words that have the exact same pronunciation, "Seisaku," that however have two distinct meanings. One is 制作 and the other 製作. These two words have often been translated as being synonymous {"production"). In the industry, however, the former refers to the studio (and its sub/contractors) that creates anime and other shows and the latter people who pour the money in (as in "production committee"). Netflix never directly does 制作. At least not yet. That must be what you mean, and if so, you are right. They do 製作. Those "Netflix original" shows mean that Netflix is (supposed to be) the sole investing party (製作) to the studio (制作). If it is "Netflix exclusive," it usually but not 100% always means that Netflix is one of the 製作 parties (committee) who then contract with the studio.

2023-02-25 19:52:33 +0000 UTCThat's the thing, Netflix is always absent in the production committe, https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/1977/Netflix

2023-02-25 16:40:38 +0000 UTCTo be fair to Netflix, they are not completely uninvolved. Most every Japanese anime these days is produced by something called a "production committee." Another term to call it is a joint venture. This is different from the creative team who actually makes the anime, as in KyoAni with VE. And a whole bunch of media companies and publishers and what not invest in an anime as members of a production committee. Without their dough, it is very difficult these days to produce an anime in Japan. Naturally, the biggest buck (yen) gets the first and best cut. Netflix does chip into many of the anime production committees, and with a very high likelihood that is how they got the exclusive streaming right of VE to North America. In Japan, however, way too many other companies jockey, and obviously Netflix (Japan) could not outspend all other guys. That is why they did not get the exclusive over there but had to share the streaming and airwave rights with others.

2023-02-24 17:40:18 +0000 UTCI hate Netflix doing this, they just have the license and they paste "original serie" like they are some kind of big deal involved in the production.

2023-02-24 14:37:29 +0000 UTCAh I can't wait for the next episode reaction. I've now rewatched this anime 7 times and counting. This anime has this weird thing where each episode feels like a 1-hour movie, time slows down when watching. Auto Memory Dolls is an occupation, you'll learn more about it on episode 2.

2023-02-24 03:52:07 +0000 UTCThis is a series I'll probably watch full reactions too instead of the edited ones. This is going to be a fun ride
Wasted Potential
2023-02-24 03:07:59 +0000 UTCExactly. Netflix has the exclusive license to run VE in North America, but they did not actually create the show/movies. In Japan, KyoAni refused to give Netflix (Japan) the exclusive rights to the VE streaming (there is a reason). Netflix (Japan) has been streaming VE anime over there, but other joints like the network and satellite TV channels have also got the rights to air VE (both anime and movies).

2023-02-24 02:44:25 +0000 UTCI can't wait to rewatch my all time favorite anime for like the 5th or 6th time.

2023-02-24 02:16:38 +0000 UTCKyoAni have done some of the most visually beautiful TV anime and the stories often compliment that with a lot of emotion. Would love to see you check out some of their other series in the future.

2023-02-24 01:58:28 +0000 UTCi'm in the minority in that i didnt love this show when i watched it, but i am going to give it another go with you. i wanted to say that i love that you react to non-shonen shows. not that those arent great, but there are usually so many reactions to the same handful of shows, i like that i can come here for different shows. Also fun fact, the English VA for Violet is the same as Ann Takamakis!

2023-02-24 01:20:06 +0000 UTCYes thank you for pointing this out I hope she sees this. Netflix deserve NONE of the credit for this masterpiece of a show, it should all go to Kyoto Animation. The best studio in all of Japan.

2023-02-24 01:17:36 +0000 UTCShe‘ll figure it out in the next couple of episodes anyways

2023-02-24 00:41:40 +0000 UTCThis isn't a Netflix series, they just like to bait viewers using that "netflix original series" lol, Netflix just have the license. VE is a KyoAni's series, a studio known for the amazing series they make and of course the stunning animation

2023-02-24 00:36:20 +0000 UTCWhat's amazing is that the original author, Kana Akatsuki, said that writing is just a hobby of hers. She is the only one to ever win the Grand Prix prize in the Kyoto Animation Grand Prix Novel Division in its 10-year history.

2023-02-24 00:32:56 +0000 UTCIt actually is adapted from a Japanese light novel series, and originally aired in Japan. Netflix produces anime for the Japanese market, too.

2023-02-24 00:22:20 +0000 UTCAn auto memory doll in this show is a woman who has been trained to write letters for clients, not merely stenographically, but also by figuring out what each client wishes to say and writing in such manner that best reflects what the client wishes to convey to the recipient of the letter.

2023-02-24 00:08:42 +0000 UTCAlana I’m a let you know now you need to go on Amazon or your local CVS and buy 3 months worth of tissues because you are going to need every last one. You will also need water on standby for every reaction as you will become dehydrated from all the sobbing. This is for your own health, proceed watching Violet Evergarden at your own risk.
