You're welcome!

You're welcome :)

bunnytails

I would have welcomed his addition to the cast!

bunnytails

I have to give high respect to all the actors who endure hours in a makeup chair for their roles!

bunnytails

Yes, I remember it now! I learned this story when I was a kid but had forgotten about it!

bunnytails

Good point!

bunnytails

Ah, thank you Timothy! Glad you like the outfit. Thanks for reminding me the story of King Solomon. Now that you describe it, I do remember learning about it when I was a kid.

bunnytails

Thank you! And yes, the acting was definitely a stand out factor in this episode.

bunnytails

Happy that you enjoyed the outfit! I sometimes worry that the Star Trek audience will be upset if I dress too out of the norm. We'll have to wait and see how the YT comments are for this one. I have to agree that the actors portraying Garth and Marta did a fantastic job. It was interesting how neither of them were bad or evil. Quite clearly they were just mentally deranged and could not see the error of their ways with their broken moral compasses. This might be a fun one to revisit at a later date.

bunnytails

Ah, the beautiful Yvonne Craig and her fantastic body! Another woman that contributed to a pubescent boy's alien fetish 😋😋 And for me she will always be the best Batgirl. And Buns, it just isn't fair that you are still in costume as you do this reaction as all that I can think of is your shoot 😍😍😍 I think it is time you made another video in costume. Your last one is so totally HOT 🔥 🔥🔥🔥

Anthony Silva

Yeah, the fact that these rehabilitation facilities are so remote can be a cause for problems with those in charge having too much freedom and not much observation from higher ups. It must be hard to manage an entire galaxy of people effectively.

bunnytails

Not a bad episode. It has some great moments, like Marta. "Oooh La La" is spot on. Marta reminds me of a girl I dated in the 80's. She wasn't green, but she was a hair stylist %). She's talked me into doing a soft perm on my mullet. Hey, it looked good!

Mark Gosine

I agreed. The Kirk v Kirk scene was hilarious though! Other than that, there was a lot of ways they could have gone, but overall underwhelming sums it up. Thanks Bunny, this was really fun!✌️✌️

ded cowbowee

I agree with you, Bunny, this is a little less than middle of the road for me. But, I did like Steve Ihnat as Garth and have always had a thing for the Yvonne Craig who played Marta; I know her better as Batgirl/Barbara Gordon from the original Batman TV series in the late 60s.

Ron

This episode seems like a "fill in" - nothing really distinct about it - "power corrupts , absolute power corrupts absolutely" oh well 2 or 3 good episodes near the end of the season - thanks again for the reaction 🩷

Steve Inhat, (Garth) who was much younger then he appeared was one of the performers Gene Roddenberry considered for a regular role in Star Trek during early casting.

Mark Chrisco

Totally. Never thought of it that way man but you are right. If you look at it from a gaming perspective Garth is the OP character that didn’t really earn it

Matthew Graves

I agree the episode was too thin. I like this one (mostly because Batgirl is in it), but it would have benefited from a Spock side quest of some kind. Agreed also that a supercure is limiting when it could have just been a breakthrough treatment. Also Garth of Izar is way too overpowered. He’s a genius shapeshifter who invented the galaxy’s most destructive explosive?! I still like the episode, but it also suffers from flat direction and lighting.

Trilogian

Yeah, agree with most everyone here, this is a middle-of-the-road episode for me too. Bunny - I saw you yawn - this will NOT make your top 10, I predict, LOL. Firstly, we've seen it all done better before (namely "Dagger of the Mind"), but I do applaud addressing mental health issues in the 23rd Century. It just seems not so well thought out here. Steve Inhat, Keye Luke and Yvonne Craig are such GOOD actors and they deserved a script so much better than what they got, which called on them to perform way over-the-top too often. Again, had this been S1 or S2, there would have been a subtlety to the story which we just don't get here. For some behind the scenes: Nimoy was livid that Spock, as written in the script, couldn't figure out a way to discern between real and fake Kirks. And so he refused to shoot the scene as originally scheduled on a Tuesday and it wasn't until Thursday that a compromise was reached between director Herb Wallerstein and Nimoy that Spock would intentionally lower his guard in front of the two Kirks to find out which one would attack him. A fact underlined by Kirk's line at the end of the show. Yvonne Craig complained about the finding traces of the green body paint in the nooks and crannies of her body weeks after shooting and also that the make-up man shaved off her eyebrows while she slept in the make-up chair. That's show business I guess!

Skyman's Follies

The Lord Garth as Spock fake out was pretty good. At first I was thinking Garth should not be able to do a Vulpan neck pinch, but then I realized the Orion girl was in on it and obviously faking.

I think the reference to King Solomon is the story where two women who lived in the same house both claim to be the mother of one baby. Both women had given birth, but one of the women's child died and she switched her dead baby with the living one in the middle of the night. They went to Solomon to resolve it. Solomon, unable to determine who the living belongs to orders the baby to be cut in half so they can each have half. One woman (not the mother) agrees to this. The real mother, not wanting her baby to be killed says to let the other woman have it. From this Solomon concluded who the real mother was because she wanted to protect the child even if it meant her not having it. It kind of parallels how Spock determined which Kirk was real (shoot both of us).

I'm also in agreement on this episode. It's an average one for me. As mentioned, The Federation does go out of its way to help mental health, by encouraging advances in developing medical knowledge. Cap't Garth really played an interesting character. Smart AND deadly. Yvonne Craig did her part really well as well. She looked awesome in green. 🥹. You would have been right at home in this episode, Bunny. Loved the photo shoot, as well as watching the reaction during the episode. I get confused over Star Wars and Star Trek aliens also, Ha Ha. It's a BIG galaxy out there. King Solomon had two mothers claiming the same baby, He decreed he would cut the baby in half, giving a half to each mother. The real mother cried out " Let her keep the baby and not die". The King then knew who the real mother was and gave the baby to her, Just like Kirk did when he said Keep the Enterprise safe and not about me first. Spock knew! Did I mention the Outfit Costume looked GREAT? 😊. Purple favors you. See you next episode.

First of all,, Bunny you are effortlessly beautiful. (But I appreciate the effort😘) Second of all, you are correct the major problem with this episode is that it’s very of its time with its understanding of how mental illness works. And there really just isn’t enough meat on the bones of the plot. It feels a little bit less less like a story then an acting exercise. That said there’s a lot of good acting. And the ending with Kirk and Spock is perfect. Fun fact: Marta’s dance Was considered too sexy for British television at the time. The episode was not shown for over a decade.

Matthew Graves

I second this proposal!

Forgive me if this question is out of bounds, but who needs a green Orion woman when we have a purple bondage Bunny? 🖖🏻 Thanks for keeping the photoshoot costume on for the reaction, it was a delightful choice. I can't believe I'm the one saying this, but I think this is a great episode. The plot is thin as rice paper, but the battle of wills between Kirk and Garth is spectacular. Kirk's compassion is on full display as he tries to reason with anyone who will listen, to no avail; Spock, while sidelined for much of the time, has some terrific moments of his own. Even the button at the end in which Kirk pokes Spock with the Solomon line feels like something from a previous season. Yvonne Craig's Marta, despite her occasional attempts at murder, is quite sympathetic. I'm not sure if her devotion to Garth is sincere or merely a coping mechanism to survive his changing moods, but either way she's a fun character. Her sudden death only underscores the stakes of the episode, that Garth isn't merely insane, but a threat to all life should he escape. (Full disclosure: I've had a lifelong crush on the late Ms. Craig since the first time I saw her playing Batgirl, so my appreciation for her work may be somewhat biased.) Speaking of Garth, I hold my highest praise for Steve Ihnat's performance as the fallen fleet captain. He shifts gears from affable to irrationally violent with hardly any warning at all, and he makes it look effortless. Throughout the episode, he projects a sense of Garth's lost greatness and traces of his former nobility. That comes through the most in the scene where Kirk almost talks him down before the madness prevails. Tragically, Steve Ihnat passed away from a heart ailment only three years after this episode. I can't argue against anyone who finds this a less-than-average outing, but it works for me. It still suffers from the "lack of polish" problem in the writing (especially as the circumstances of Garth's injury and subsequent insanity are rather nebulous), but once again, the acting, costumes, score, etc. manage to save the day.

Lee

That would be so kewl if you did a cosplay of Yvonne's Batgirl from the 60s :)

I agree both with Bunny in what she said about this episode at the end AND with William's comments above. Some great things in this episode -- amazing guest acting from Key Luke and Yvonne Craig, great outfits and costumes, Shatner also got to act out of character, and some tense moments, bogged down by a slow and confusing plot line that dragged out a bit too long. As an adult, I like this better then when I was a kid, and it's not a BAD episode, it's just in the average category for me. I'm glad you wore the Bunny Girl outfit for this! For anyone who doesn't know, Bunny also posts photoshoots here in her Patreon once a month if you back at a high enough level (one level for some shots, another for all of the shots) and she just released yesterday the full photoshoot of the outfit, an amazing one and one of my favorites. Please don't worry about mixing up Star Wars and Star Trek races, Bunny -- I still do that from time to time myself. :) It doesn't help a lot of them look similar....I can't help but wonder if the Star Wars folks were unconsciously influenced by Star Trek with some design elements. Mental health is a issue that Star Trek really likes to use a lot in the shows and movies over the years -- we've already seen it and we'll see it a lot more. The fact that almost everyone can be treated is encouraging, and the Federation tries hard to help everyone and provide humane conditions at least for those they can't. In some ways, this show was ahead of the pack. Did you notice Garth's fur coat? He only ever had one arm inserted in it -- a nice touch to his mad character. Some trivia for this episode: The title is based on a phrase spoken by Prometheus in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, The Masque of Pandora (1875): "Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad." Yvonne Craig, who played Marta, had an amazing and long run in Hollywood where she was in numerous shows and movies. Old timers like myself best know her as playing Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) in the last season of Batman in 1967-1968. She looked great in that outfit and a lot of people praised her strong character in a TV show known for being 'campy'. Marta is supposed to be a Orion, but she didn't look the same as Vina from "The Cage". In an interview years later, she talked about why this was and her experience doing this guest spot (copied from her Wikipedia article as it's easiest): "Susan [Oliver, who portrayed the Orion "Vina" in the show's pilot episode "The Cage"] and I were supposed to be from the same planet. Only they couldn’t remember how they got Susan green in the first season episode – they somehow had lost the makeup. So, they had to devise a substitute formula. I had skid marks because the makeup wouldn’t stay on. Then, they sprayed me with Liquid Bandage, which has to be removed with acetone, so my skin was all burned – I was a walking disaster. When you perspire, Liquid Bandage won’t stick, so here I was, walking around with moss hanging from my armpits. It was just hideous. I would take two showers at the studio, then go home and take an oil bath, and then take another shower to get the remainder of it off. Then, I would start all over again the next day". Craig discussed having to provide her own choreography, saying "When they had to audition me they said, 'Can you do a three-minute dance?' and I said, 'Unless you're doing The Red Shoes, three minutes is a long time,' but I said, 'Yes, I can do a three-minute dance if you want it, but you'll probably just have to cut it to pieces, because that's crazy'. It's nuts, but it was fun to do" Finally, checking Wikipedia, I found there was a fan film recently made that acts as a prequel to this episode (what happened to Capital Garth). I've not seen it yet, but I'll drop the link here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prelude_to_Axanar

That costume looks great on bunny, the shackles, chains, fishnet as much as you like @ yes sir she can boogie! Key Luke, who played the imprisoned leader, was a longtime presence in film and voice acting-he played Number 1 Son in the Charlie Chan movies-helped George Takei get his break and Takei here returning the favor. I'm sensing an anti-Napoleon vibe, with the planet named Elba 2, and Garth a megalomaniac with a Josephine and biblical quotes. "They have eyes but cannot see." However Kirk and Spock do spend a little time puffing him up. I see they have Garth in the coronation robes. I liked the various inmates, however I preferred the Tellarite in Journey to Babel with the great makeup and mask, here it's just eyebrows and a big nose. I take the reference to Solomon was Solomon didn't get a WWF upside the head before his famous split the baby decision. A good episode and I agree they didn't tighten up the script enough for a fifty minute story. The federation goes for the rehabilitation method of punishment over the punitive method. So far we've seen the prisons are so isolated on uninhabitable planets the leaders do whatever they want. See Dagger of the Mind. Now bunny can go for a walk. Thanks for the reacts!
