Also, this episode has one of the best understated threats from Spock uttered in Star Trek:
TRELANE: Don't fret, Captain. I'm only a bit upset with you, but this Mister Spock you mentioned, the one responsible for that unseemly, impudent act of taking you from me, which is he?
SPOCK: I am Spock.
TRELANE: Surely not an officer. He isn't quite human, is he?
SPOCK: My father is from the planet Vulcan.
TRELANE: And are its natives predatory?
SPOCK: Not generally. But there have been exceptions.

That is not a turkey baster, but rather a standard Starfleet issue ground-to-orbit laser beacon, used to signal the ship if standard subspace communications are blocked. You basically wave it around at the ship, which will see the beam and recognize that something is wrong, but even that was being blocked by Trelane.

Agreed. Not to mention Trelane likely inspired The Q.

I really enjoy this episode -- not in my top 10, but up there. It's both light hearted and serious at the same time, and has an interesting theme going with a superpowerfull race that still has kids that have to 'grow up' and become mature with their powers.
William Campbell played Trelane in this episode and he had a long career doing roles in a bunch of movies and TV shows. He will also be seen in another Star Trek episode later on. I agree that he did a great job with the role.
This was one of three scripts that were submitted back when Janice Rand was still on the show and the part was written for her.
As for the time period that Trelane is using here.....(puts on my history hat). It's not clear what year that he was going for, but all of the signs point to this being just after the Napoleonic Period (1815-1830). There are mentions to Napoleon himself, a bust of Admiral Nelson, a reference to the famous duel with Hamilton which happened in 1804, and so on. The dress he puts the Yeoman in is really more suited for the late 18th century but it works here as well.

This might be the most extreme example of me not caring for an episode to start and then having it really, *really* grow on me the more I've watched it. I remember very much disliking it for being so unserious but as I've grown older my tolerance and even love of things that are a little unserious has grown as well. The Trelane character is just this side of too over-the-top such that he's perfect and the actor wonderful. Paired with some classic Trek/sci-fi tropes I dare say this might be right up there with Balance of Terror and The Galileo Seven as one of my stone cold favourites, as well as of course some that we haven't gotten to yet. See you in the next one, B. Tallyho!

Regarding DeSalle leading the landing party... The uniform colors generally conform to the type of position they hold. In the original series era, gold is Command & Control, blue is Science & Medical, and red is Support Services (engineering, communications, security, etc.)
The commanding officer (whether Kirk or whoever is currently in charge) can delegate commanding authority to any officer they choose. Kirk almost always turns command over to Spock when necessary (as Kirk's first officer), and often to Scotty if there isn't an engineering crisis underway (as a very experienced officer who excelled in tactics at the Academy [this is revealed in several novels]).
But other than those two, temporary ship command and away mission command are usually given to officers from Command & Control, even if there are officers of equal or higher rank present from Science/Medical or Support Services. This is why DeSalle leads the away team over McCoy, why Sulu is often given the conn instead of Uhura, etc.
