I think Zuko his stance in this episode is really good. He lost his own mother so he feels the pain Katara feels. He is literally going to help the Avatar kill his father (the one responsible for his mother's disappearance. Zuko wants to be good. But being good does that mean doing good things for a good reason or can it also mean doing something bad for a good reason? I love my mother and if anyone would take her from me I think I would do exactly the same as Katara. Find that bastard and when I am ready to kill him back off because I am strong enough to not do it. And to defeat the fire lord every member of the team avatar need to be on the same page. They cannot do it if Katara hates Zuko every minute of it. And this is literally the only way how Zuko could earn Katara's trust. I think that Zuko found it more important to earn Katara her trust than to say a life of an asshole. I like this episode a lot because so right before the great battle they show that even someone with such a pure heart as Katara is capable of bad things. And to show how strong she really is. This episode is one of the reasons why the characters in ATLA are so interesting because they have so many sides to them. And the different sides work together. And I find it brilliant that they show that even if Katara hates bloodbending she is so strong is mastered it completely. This is one of my favorite episodes.

Yeah, it took me a bit to realize!

Saying Katara's mother was "gone" was just a softer, Nickelodeon-friendly way of saying she was murdered. The line "I'm afraid I'm not taking prisoners today" is pretty clear about Kya's fate.
