Star Trek: The Original Series - "The Menagerie Part 1" Full Reaction!

Comments

Okay, so I didn't dream up those styrophoam containers, good! I wasn't too bothered by the pacing. In some parts yes. But at least they didn't use every minute of footage from the pilot, though they did use most of it, it seems. I was enjoying rewatching it since I enjoyed it so much the first time.

Well, you know my feelings from watching part 2 already, but I am glad I watched the pilot first. Otherwise I would not have cared as much about this Captain Pike fellow.

It wasn't a huge spoil. It coulda been much worse!

I think I'll stick to release order of each series, but I am quite curious about SNW!

I do hope Jose ended up getting his peppers!

The thing that baffles me is that there is sooooo much to talk about within each episode that there's literally never any reason to mention anything else. Spock's mutiny is kinda the entire core of this episode and now the entire shock value of that is gone, especially now that you've become familiar and invested in that character. Each episode is a piece of the STUniverse puzzle. It's for us to help explain the pieces but for you, B, to put those pieces together, including all the retcons, inconsistencies and the evolution of said TV universe. Unless of course you ask for clarification. One would think that's a simple concept but apparently folk still struggling with it smh. Look, this is still a banger of an episode with a nasty ass cliffhanger. Such a great concept to work the unaired pilot back into the canon. We'd expect that sort of thing today in this era of high TV drama (I'd even go so far as to say shows often try too hard to be overly creative in the storytelling) but to see them do it back in the late 60s is fuckin' wild. Of course we still don't know the why's and wherefore's of Spock's mutiny. What are his reasons? Are we going to even make it to Talos IV? What will we find if we get there? How far up shit creek is Spock going to be with Fleet Command? Also presumably yes that is indeed the same Jose mentioned back in The Man Trap, very astute pickup 👍 See you "next week" for the conclusion, cheers 🙂

After Menagerie Part 2, you could start watching Star Trek "Strange New Worlds." That series features Capt Pike, Number One, Mr. Spock and others. It takes place during the time period after Talos IV up to the radiation accident. There are a couple episodes of Star Trek Discovery that could be fit in as well that primarily feature Capt. Pike. We had to wait nearly sixty years to have episodes about that time period, but you get the option now to fit them in chronologically.

Definitely looking forward to your reaction to Part 2. Anything with green Orion space girls has got to be good! ;-)

I kind of feel middle of the ground with this two parter -- I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. There's some interesting ideas here, like Spock showing that loyalty to Captain Pike that he would disobey orders. And I don't fault the Star Trek folks for wanting to recycle a lot of "The Cage" since it was made. I think my experience watching this two parter, though, was due to the fact that we already had SEEN The Cage where as the audience from the 60's has not, so due to that experience it causes this episode to be dragged out and slow paced for me -- "We already saw this" and that kind of thing. Jeffrey Hunter, who played Captain pike in the pilot, was not available when this episode was made, and also people have said they couldn't afford to hire him to reprise his role anyway. So they had to come up with some way to explain that, hence the 'accident' and the rough state Pike was in. Yeah, I recall the plastic styraphone containers that McD's used to use. :) Star Trek has always made really good use of combining the 'background' -- matte paintings or models -- with the 'foreground', the actual set that the actors worked in. Even the modern shows still do this. I'm really sorry if some of this was spoiled for you already. It's always rough when that happens. LOL at the comments about the Orion girls. Interested to see your reaction to part two!

I'm sorry you may have been spoiled, Bunny. Those YouTube commenters are always up to no good. *shakes fist*

It feels odd because, "The Cage," was an unaired pilot. Unfortunately, you saw it before seeing, "The Menagerie." Oh well, this is the only time this type of thing happens. After this, it's all episodic, stand-alone episodes. So, you can watch them in whatever order you want for the most part. Regarding Pike as the lead instead of Kirk, I think he seems very different only because he's an earlier version of Kirk. I like Pike as he's portrayed here though. As you probably know, there is a prequel series which covers the Pike era, but I'm not a fan of it. There are some actual fans of of it however. I am not among them.
