Those are my favorite!

Thanks! I found a similar channel that has some comparison videos that I was looking over but this channel has way more episodes! The other only had a handful.

I really don't like the remastered versions. I really think something was lost in doing so. Anyways....can't wait for you to see 'Balance of Terror'!!!!

There are so many memes...."Am I a doctor or a ?" As the series progresses he comes up with some good ones!

Hey Bunny, if you haven't found it yet, there is a great BTS video on this episode's VFX comparing the original vs. remastered: title: "All Versions Of... - Star Trek - The Corbomite Maneuver - Visual Effects Comparison" channel: TrekkieChannel pt 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQQDL1p52ys pt2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sxeDBbiPnY

I remember watching those old effects; they weren't bad, and were ground breaking for a TV series at the time. But I understand, they didn't really translate well when higher resolution TVs came out. I think the remastering was worth it.

What does science officer do, and does he stay that position for the whole show?

bunnytails

Bunny, I saw you bobbing your head to the music. Music was written by Alexander Courage, and yes, it was a full orchestra.

Spock's rank: Commander, Position: Science Officer, Command: 2nd in Command.

"The only thing on the original show to show rank was the color of the uniforms. Starting with Next Generation they used pips -- dots on the collar -- to show rank, which they have kept for future shows." This isn't all correct. In TOS, the rank is indicated by the lines on the cuffs of the shirt sleeves. In TOS the colors just indicate what division of Starfleet the wearer works in - Gold for Command, Blue for Sciences, Red for Operations. They later dropped this and went with all red coats and rank badges for the TOS movies (except the Motion Picture), but by the time of TNG the colors were back with Blue still Sciences, and Red & Gold swapped; Red became Command and Gold became Operations. You are 100% correct that they went with Pips and later Bars to show rank from TNG on. https://www.deviantart.com/michael-taylor1134/art/TOS-Ranks-699167138

The percentages they refer to are the efficiency rating of the particular exercise they were performing. 100% means they did it perfectly. You can hear Spock say "I agree" when Kirk insists on 100%, as a Vulcan, Spock would of course demand perfection as well. I imagine Starfleet has a nice handbook somewhere with all the various procedures of starship operations, the specific tasks laid out, and the time expected to perform them.

One of my favorite episodes -- not in the top 10 but close to it. To answer your question about ranks and positions, Star Trek is modeled strongly off the Navy (of the US and other nations) so the crew ranks and positions are the same as found on ships. The ranks go from bottom to top: Ensign Lieutenant Junior Grade Lieutenant Lieutenant Commander Commander Captain Admiral The only thing on the original show to show rank was the color of the uniforms. Starting with Next Generation they used pips -- dots on the collar -- to show rank, which they have kept for future shows. Your husband's uniform is a Commander rank, blue meaning either medical or science department. Spock has the rank of Commander during the show (though they hardly use it) and is the First Officer. On ships FO's do a ton of the work to make the Captain's life easier. They handle many routine day to day functions, and also conduct personal reviews and a lot of the paperwork. Should something happen to both the Captain and First Officer the Second Officer (XO) would take command. On the Enterprise that's Scotty.

A very riveting early episode, definitely showed the intensity that "submarine warfare" on a space ship can provide. Uhura's golden uniform in this and your next episode definitely show transitions were still taking place, also note this is the only episode where Dr. McCoy isn't called Bones.

You should do Star Trek watch along, so we could answer your questions immediately without spoiling. Most of the original models and effects before remaster were very bad. They only kept the models and sets that don't look tacky after remaster. The original series is from the point of view of Cold War America, when people worried about nuclear war at any moment and whether or not human beings had the wisdom and moral capability to handle advanced technology. The Next Generation was post Cold War, where people didn't worry so much about nuclear war and were more hopeful about the prospects for the future of humanity.
