It’s both. If you’re on phone you have to download the app. Computer is the second one. You need an invite to any given chat regardless of what tech you’re using.

I’m new to the whole discord thing is it a separate app you have to download or is it an online server you just join like a chat room type thing ?

The link that's available is expired, so I'm guessing that whenever she gets the new server code, she'll share it with us. In terms of working Discord itself, once you click the invite link, it will ask if you want to join the server. The directions come up on the screen and it's pretty self-explanatory, so there isn't anything to worry about.
